Kortrijk
Kortrijk ( , ; or ''Kortrik''; ), sometimes known in English as Courtrai or Courtray ( ), is a Belgian City status in Belgium, city and Municipalities in Belgium, municipality in the Flemish Region, Flemish Provinces of Belgium, province of West Flanders. With its 80,000 inhabitants (2024) Kortrijk is the capital and largest city of the judicial and administrative arrondissement of Kortrijk. The wider municipality comprises the city of Courtrai proper and the villages of Aalbeke, Bellegem, Bissegem, Heule, Kooigem, Marke (Belgium), Marke, and Rollegem. Courtrai is also part of the cross-border Lille-Kortrijk-Tournai metropolitan area. The city is on the river Leie, southwest of Ghent and northeast of Lille. Mouscron in Wallonia is just south of Courtrai. Courtrai originated from a Gallo-Roman town, ''Cortoriacum'', at a crossroads near the Leie river and two Roman roads. Kortrijk City Hall
The City Hall ( Dutch: ) of Kortrijk, West Flanders, Belgium, is situated on that city's Grote Markt (main square), between Leiestraat and Rijselsestraat. The facade in late-Gothic or early Renaissance style is adorned with statues of the Counts of Flanders. History As early as the 14th century, Kortrijk possessed a town hall, which was, however, completely gutted down by the French army after the victory at Westrozebeke in 1382. In 1420, a larger town hall was built in High Gothic style. The pointed arches in the hall on the ground-flour and upstairs are the only remnants of that building. The present city hall was erected about 1520 in a style composed of Gothic and Renaissance elements. It was considerably larger than its predecessor. The front was gilded and polychromed (as the front of the Brussels town hall still is). West Flanders
West Flanders is the westernmost province of the Flemish Region, in Belgium. It is the only coastal Belgian province, facing the North Sea to the northwest. The Broel Towers () are a listed monument and a landmark in the Belgian city of Kortrijk (''Courtrai''). The towers are known as one of the most important symbols of the city. History Although they look identical, the towers were not built at the same time. The Southern tower, also known as the ''Speyetoren'', was built in 1385 to control the traffic on the river Lys. Schouwburgplein (Kortrijk)
The Schouwburgplein (''Theatre Square'') is situated in the heart of the city of Kortrijk, Belgium, and is flanked by the municipal theatre (''Stadsschouwburg'') and several historic buildings. The rectangular square was formed after the demolition of the old ''Lakenhalle'' (Clothes Hall) (built in 1411), which was severely damaged by friendly fire in 1944. The square is situated between the ''Doorniksestraat'' and the ''Havermarkt'' and occupies an area of 5,060 square metres. Today, the square is a pedestrian area with several bars and outdoor cafés. Underneath the square there is a large Multistorey car park, parking garage, which was built in 1993. A beguinage, from the French language, French term , is an architectural complex which was created to house beguines: lay religious women who lived in community without taking vows or retiring from the world.
