Konstantin Shteppa
Konstantin Feodosyevich Shteppa, russian: Константин Феодосьевич Штеппа, also Step(p)a (3 December 1896, Lokhvytsia, Poltava Governorate — 19 November 1958, New York City) was a Soviet and American historian of German-Ukrainian descent. He studied history of the Byzantine Empire, the Orthodox Church, late medieval history of Ukraine and the history of Stalin's purge. Originally an NKVD informant, he switched allegiance to the SD, the intelligence agency of the SS and the Gestapo, during World War II. He immigrated to the US after the war, where he worked taught and for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Early years in Ukraine Shteppa was born into the family of an Orthodox priest of German descent in Ukraine. He studied at the Poltava Theological Seminary (1910-1914) and at the Faculty of History and Philology of St. Petersburg University under Professor Mykhailo Rostovtsev. Lokhvytsia
Lokhvytsia ( uk, Ло́хвиця, , ; russian: Ло́хвица, ) is a city in Poltava Oblast (province) of central Ukraine. It is the administrative center of Lokhvytsia Raion (district), and is located on the banks of the Lokhvytsia River. Population: History The name of the river Lokhvytsia, as well as the town, comes from the Old Slavonic word ''lokhve'' which means "salmon". At the time of Kievan Rus' the territory where the town is located was part of Pereyaslav Principality. The precise date of the foundation is unknown. From written records, it can be determined that Lokhvytsia existed prior to 1320. In 1644, Magdeburg rights were granted to the town so that all town issues were to be resolved by a city council, elected by the wealthy citizens. Clemens Augustinus Emmanuel Joseph Pius Anthonius Hubertus Marie Graf von Galen (16 March 1878 – 22 March 1946), better known as ''Clemens August Graf von Galen'', was a German count, Bishop of Münster, and cardinal of the Catholic Church. During World War II, Galen led Catholic protests against Nazi euthanasia and denounced Gestapo lawlessness and the persecution of the Church in Nazi Germany. He was appointed a cardinal by Pope Pius XII in 1946, shortly before his death, and was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005. Born into the German aristocracy, Galen received part of his education in Austria-Hungary from the Jesuits at Stella Matutina in the town of Feldkirch.
