Konkani Cinema
Konkani cinema is an Indian film industry, where films are made in the Konkani language, which is spoken mainly in the Indian states of Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka and to a smaller extent in Kerala. The films have been produced in Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala. The first full-length Konkani film was ''Sukhi Konn'' produced by GMB Rodrigues in 1949 but was never released. ''Mogacho Anvddo'', was released on 24 April 1950, and was produced and directed by Al Jerry Braganza, a native of Mapusa, under the banner of ETICA Pictures. Hence, 24 April is celebrated as Konkani Film Day. Konkani film ''The Man Beyond the Bridge, Paltadcho munis'' has been included in the world's best films of 2009 list. Frank Fernand
Franklin Fernandes (3 May 1919 – 1 April 2007), better known as Frank Fernand, was an Indian filmmaker and musician who is known for some of the earliest films in Konkani cinema, such as '' Amchem Noxib'' (1963) and '' Nirmon'' (1966). Early life Franklin Fernandes was born in Curchorem, Goa and had his initial training in music from Diego Rodrigues and mastered violin and trumpet. In 1936, he moved to Bombay. He began playing music under well-known band-leader George Theodore at Green's Hotel and Taj Mahal Hotel. Career Early musical career In 1942, he left Mumbai for Mussoorie to play with Rudy Cotton's band and blossomed into a fine jazz musician. He lived and played in Delhi for a while the same year. In the 1940s, when he was playing at a resort in Mussoorie, Mahatma Gandhi happened to be passing through. Frank Fernand listened to one of his lectures, and it brought about a big change in him. Paltadacho Munis
''Paltadacho Munis'' or ''The Man Beyond the Bridge'' is an Indian film in Konkani directed by Laxmikant Shetgaonkar. Set in Goa, the film is about a recently widowed forest ranger in a dwindling forest, who strikes up an unlikely relationship with a woman he finds lost and alone in the woods. The film tries to destigmatise mental illness, often equated with being possessed by the devil in rural India. The film was premiered at 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the prize of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI Prize) for Discovery. It was chosen as opening film of the Indian Panorama section at the 40th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2009. ''Kazaar'' () is a 2009 Konkani film directed by Richard Castelino and produced by Frank Fernandes. It stars Larry Fernandes and Harshika Poonachcha. Larry stars in the movie as a NRI boy, who comes back to Mangalore to get married, while Harshika plays the role of his bride. The movie was initially scheduled to be released on 9 September 2009 but was delayed by two months, finally being released on 27 November 2009. Synopsis The story is woven around family and social values, portraying the importance to society of marriage vows and family stability. Bonifacio Dias
Bonifacio Dias (born 17 November 1947) is an Indian filmmaker, playwright, theatrical director, theatrical producer, and actor known for his work in Konkani films and ''tiatr'' (Goan musical theatre) productions. Career In the year 1977, Dias undertook the roles of scriptwriter and director for his debut ''tiatr'' show, ''Gupit Mog'' (Secret Love). Subsequently, in 1979, he presented another ''tiatr'' production called ''Gupit Chori'' (Secret Theft). He went on to create several other popular ''tiatr'' works over the years, including ''Sounsar Konak Zai'' (Who needs the world?), ''Itlean Roste Bondh'', ''Mhozo Uncle Tuzo Pai'' (My Uncle Your Father), ''Zulum'' (Injustice), ''Doth ani Dennem Saudi Arabiachem'' (Dowry and Blessings of Saudi Arabia), and ''To Nhoim Bhau Mhozo'' (He's not my Brother). Padri (film)
''Padri'' (translation: Priest) is a 2005 Konkani language film directed by Rajesh Fernandes and produced by Raymond Quadros. It stars Newton D'Souza and Arona Fernandes in the lead roles as protagonists and Kiran Kerkar, Thapan Acharya, and Annie Quadros in the supporting roles. Sundeep Malani plays a guest role in the film. The soundtrack and background score were composed by Wilfy Rebimbus. The film is based on a Goan play of the same title ''Padri'', which was directed by Prince Jacob. Rajendra Talak
Rajendra Talak is an Indian film director. He is best known for his award-winning Konkani language, Konkani films, such as Aleesha (film), ''Aleesha'' and ''O Maria''. Early life Talak was born in Comba, Goa, Comba, Margao, Goa, India. He attended the Mahila Nutan and Popular High Schools in Margao and later joined Parvatibai Chowgule College, from which he graduated with a bachelors of science. He was a state-ranked table tennis player, and represented his college in table tennis and badminton competitions. In the 1970s, Talak was a member of tabla player Sushant Keshav Naik's music group, Mahesh Kumar & Party. The group later became part of the Gomant Vidya Niketan Kala Vibha and produced award-winning Marathi language, Marathi dramas.
