Kongolo, Tanganyika District
Kongolo is a town in Tanganyika Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is located on the west bank of the Lualaba River, the largest headstream of the Congo River. It has 62,455 inhabitants. Namesakes There are plenty of other towns in Congo with the same name. Transport Kongolo is served by a railway station on the national system, which bridges the Lualaba river at this point via the Kongolo Bridge. The city lies across the river from Regional Road 631 (R631), linking Kayuyu, Lubao, Kabalo, Kongolo and Nyunzu; and is also on the (much smaller) Regional Road 632 (R632). Kongolo Massacre On 1 January 1962, one Dutch and nineteen Belgian missionaries, including the Crauwels brothers, , and were killed by radical elements of the Congolese army. Tanganyika Province
Tanganyika () is one of the 21 provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo created in the 2015 repartitioning. Tanganyika, Haut-Katanga, Haut-Lomami and Lualaba provinces are the result of the splitting up of the former Katanga province. Tanganyika was formed from the Tanganyika district whose town of Kalemie was elevated to capital city of the new province. The new province's territory corresponds to the historic Nord-Katanga province that existed in the early period of post-colonial Democratic Republic of the Congo between 1962 and 1966. History Tanganyika province was the scene of a rebellion by the Luba-Katanga people against the independent state of Katanga. The Lualaba River (, , ) flows entirely within the eastern part of Democratic Republic of the Congo. Kongolo Bridge
Kongolo Bridge is a cantilever rail and road bridge that crosses the Lualaba River. It was constructed by the Belgians in 1939, and was reconstructed in 1968 under the Mobutu regime by the German engineer Erich F. Weigl. It is located near the town of Kongolo. The width of the Lualaba river is about 440 m, while the main span of the bridge is 70 meters, and has a single 5-meter-wide lane for all traffic, including dual-gauge rails. Kayuyu
Kayuyu is a settlement in Maniema province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Location Kayuyu is in the Pangi Territory of Maniema province. Kayuyu is capital of the Wakabango 2 sector. It is from Kindu. Pangi Territory is mostly occupied only by Lega people. In May 1999 a Mai-Mai resistance force including Lega groups from Kayuyu, Kampene and other towns threatened Kindu. The Köppen climate classification is Aw : Tropical savanna, wet. Pangi territory has a subequatorial climate characterized by the alternation of two seasons. Crauwels Brothers
Gaston Crauwels, C.S.Sp. (1923—1962), and Louis Crauwels, C.S.Sp. (1927—1962), were Belgian missionaries of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (''Spiritans'') who were killed together with seventeen other Belgian Spiritans and one Dutch brother by radical African nationalist elements of the national army '' Armée Nationale Congolaise'' on new year's day 1962, during the Kongolo Massacre. In 2019, the Diocese of Kongolo started the process of beatification of the twenty missionaries, including the Crauwels brothers. Early life Gaston and Louis Crauwels were two of ten children born to carpenter Frans Crauwels, and Bertha Hendrickx, in the village of Walem near Mechelen. They went to the missionary college of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit in Lier, Gaston from 1936 to 1945, and Louis from 1928 to 1948.
