Konak is a municipality and Districts of Turkey, district of İzmir Province, Turkey. Its area is 24 km2, and its population is 332,277 (2022). It is the most densely populated of the thirty districts of İzmir, and has historically acted as the administrative and economic core of the city. Situated in an area that roughly corresponds to the geographic center of İzmir, Konak extends for along the southern coastline of the Gulf of İzmir. Konak (İzmir Metro)
Konak is an underground station on the M1 Line of the İzmir Metro in central Konak. Located just south of Konak Square, it is one of the ten original stations of the metro system. The architecture of the station consists of a main hall with a high ceiling, with mezzanines on both sides. The only other station to share this architecture is Çankaya. Connection to İzdeniz municipal ferries from Konak Terminal as well as ESHOT city bus service is available. Service began on 24 March 2018, connection to the Konak Tram also became possible via Konak İskele station. The northern mezzanine has exits to the Konak Ferry Terminal, Konak Square, while the southern mezzanine has exits to the Konak city bus stops, via an underpass beneath Halil Rıfat Paşa Avenue. Konak Square () is a busy square at the southern end of Atatürk Avenue in the Konak district of İzmir, Turkey. The square is named after the '' Vali Konağı'' (Governor's Mansion) of İzmir Province, which is located here ('' konak'' means ''mansion'' in Turkish.) Volkan Konak
Volkan Konak (27 February 1967 – 31 March 2025) was a Turkish folk singer from the eastern Black Sea. His song "Cerrahpaşa" was a great success and his album, ''Mora'', released in 2006, was awarded a gold plaque by the Turkish recording producers association, MÜ-YAP. Early life Konak was born in 1967 in the village of Yeşilyurt in the Maçka district of Trabzon. After completing his primary, secondary and high school education in Maçka, he entered the Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory in 1983 with the encouragement of his teacher. He graduated from the conservatory in 1988 and started his master's degree in Social Sciences on folk music at Istanbul Technical University in the same year. He completed his master's degree in 1991. Career Konak started his musical life in 1989 with an album named ''Suların Horon Yeri'', based on a compilation of works from the Maçka region. Originally built in 1891 as the residence ('' konak'') of the governor-general ('' vali'') of the Salonica Vilayet and the seat of the Ottoman authorities, it now houses the Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace. History The Konak was built in 1891 by Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli. The architect chose eclecticism as the main style for the building, which combines elements of various architectural styles such as neoclassicism. It sits on top of the ruins of the imperial palace of the Byzantine Emperor in Thessaloniki, of which some remnants have been found near the building. When it was completed in the late 1890s, it only had three floors. The fourth floor, in neoclassical style, was added in 1955.
