Koksijde
Koksijde (; ; ) is a town and a Municipalities of Belgium, municipality in Belgium. It is located on the North Sea coast in the southwest of the Flanders, Flemish province of West Flanders. The municipality comprises apart from Koksijde, the villages of Oostduinkerke, Saint-Idesbald and Wulpen, Belgium, Wulpen. On 1 January 2018, Koksijde municipality had a total population of 21,957 on a total area of , which gives a population density of . Since 1995 Marc Vanden Bussche has been mayor of Koksijde. Municipality The municipality of Koksijde comprises the "deelgemeenten" Koksijde, Oostduinkerke, Saint-Idesbald and Wulpen (Belgium), Wulpen. The old town centre of Koksijde is located about two kilometres from the shoreline. Close by the sea, a new tourist centre, Koksijde-bad, has developed. Ten Duinen Abbey
Ten Duinen Abbey or the Abbey of the Dunes () was a Cistercian monastery at Koksijde in what is now Belgium. It was one of the richest and most influential religious institutions in the medieval County of Flanders. It later relocated from Koksijde to the city of Bruges. History A religious community was founded in the dunes near Koksijde by the hermit Ligerius in 1107. In 1120 the community took the Rule of St Benedict as its rule of life, and in 1139 it became affiliated to the Cistercians, Cistercian Order. Partly through donations and partly through land reclamation work in the dunes and polders, the monastery developed extensive landholdings on which the lay brothers reared sheep, producing wool for the cloth trade. A dependent house was established at Eastchurch, in Kent, to export wool from England, but was later sold to Boxley Abbey. Until 1970, Wulpen was an independent municipality. History Wulpen was first mentioned in 961. During the 12th century it was a fishing village. In 1577, the village was destroyed by the Geuzen, rebels fighting from an independent Netherlands. In the 17th century the village was sieged first by France and later by Spain. In 1900, Wulpen was an agricultural community with four brickyards. During World War I, the German army was racing through Belgium towards to the North Sea. In the Battle of the Yser which took place October 1914, the polders between the Yser and the railway line were inundated. Saint-Idesbald (; ) a village at the Belgian West Coast, part of Koksijde, which also includes Oostduinkerke. Its name refers to Saint Idesbald (or Idesbaldus), a 12th-century abbot of the Abbey of Ten Duinen. Nieuwpoort ( , ; ; ) is a City status in Belgium, city and Municipalities of Belgium, municipality located in Flemish Region, Flanders, one of the three regions of Belgium, in the province of West Flanders. The Paul Delvaux Museum () is a private museum in Saint-Idesbald, Belgium, devoted to the life and works of the painter Paul Delvaux. It was established in 1982 by the Foundation Paul Delvaux and houses the world's largest collection of Delvaux's works. History In 1982, the Foundation Paul Delvaux took the initiative to establish the Paul Delvaux Museum, a private museum in Saint-Idesbald, Koksijde municipality, devoted to the painter Paul Delvaux (1897–1994). Delvaux had a personal connection to Saint-Idesbald and had built a house and studio in the style of a fishing cottage there in 1951. A driving force behind the museum was Delvaux's nephew Charles Van Deun, who on the foundation's behalf purchased Het Vlierhof, a former fisherman's cottage that had been enlarged into a hotel-restaurant. Oostduinkerke
Oostduinkerke (; ; ) is a place on the southern west coast of Belgium, located in the province of West Flanders. Once a municipality of its own, Oostduinkerke now is a sub-municipality in the municipality of Koksijde. The name ''Oostduinkerke'' translates as 'East Dunkirk'. The town originally shared its name with the city of Dunkirk in current-day France; therefore, in the 13th century, ''Oost-'' was added to its name to avoid confusion with its namesake further to the west. Oostduinkerke lies amidst a dune area (approximately 2.4 km2; 1 sq. mi.), which is now a protected nature reserve.
