Koen () is a Dutch language given name and surname, popular in the Netherlands and Flanders. Although the earliest direct attestation comes from Oudenaarde, East Flanders in 1272, it is known to have been derived from the Proto-Germanic name ''*kōnja-'', meaning "brave". Koen Kessels
Koen Kessels (born 1961) is a Belgian conductor and pianist. He is music director of The Royal Ballet and of Het Balletorkest, affiliated with the Dutch National Ballet. Biography Trained as a pianist, Kessels studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp. He became a repetiteur and an assistant conductor at the Vlaamse Opera. He founded the music ensemble HERMES in 1998 and continues to serve as its artistic director. He has served as music director for the Belgian summer opera festival Zomeropera Alden Biesen. Kessels became music director of Birmingham Royal Ballet in 2010. In 2015, he became music director of The Royal Ballet. Koen Casteels (; born 25 June 1992) is a Belgian professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah. Formed at Genk, Casteels spent most of his professional career in Germany with TSG Hoffenheim, Werder Bremen (loan) and VfL Wolfsburg, making over 200 Bundesliga appearances. Koen Daerden (; born 8 March 1982) is a Belgian former professional football player and current coach, who works as sporting director for the youth or head of the youth department at Racing Genk. Club career Daerden was born in Tongeren. He started his senior career with K.R.C. Genk, where he became captain. He signed a one-year contract with Club Brugge in June 2006 for a reported transfer fee of €4,000,000. On 15 January 2010, Daerden joined Standard Liège from Club Brugge until June 2013.
