Knut Berg
Knut Berg (4 August 1925 – 29 November 2007) was a Norwegian art historian and museologist. Biography He was born in Oslo, Norway. He was the son of architect and antiquarian Arno Berg (1890–1974) and Signe Mowinckel Larsen (1887–1966). His father was the first head of the department for cultural heritage in Oslo. He studied at the University of Oslo obtaining a master's degree in art history in 1953. He continued his medieval studies in the United Kingdom, Italy and France. In 1967 he became dr.philos. Berg was assigned with the National Gallery of Norway for thirty years, and served as director of the museum for 22 years, from 1973 to 1995. His works include the 7-volume ''Norges kunsthistorie'' (principal editor and contributor) and ''Norges malerkunst'' (1993), and he was project leader for ''Norsk Kunstnerleksikon'', jointly with Stephan Tschudi-Madsen (1923–2007). Oslo
Oslo ( or ; ) is the capital and most populous city of Norway. It constitutes both a county and a municipality. The municipality of Oslo had a population of in 2022, while the city's greater urban area had a population of 1,064,235 in 2022, and the metropolitan area had an estimated population of in 2021. Knut Helle
Knut Helle (19 December 1930 – 27 June 2015) was a Norwegian historian. A professor at the University of Bergen from 1973 to 2000, he specialized in the late medieval history of Norway. He has contributed to several large works. Early life, education and marriage He was born in Larvik as the son of school inspector Hermann Olai Helle (1893–1973) and teacher Berta Marie Malm (1906–1991). He was the older brother of politician Ingvar Lars Helle. The family moved to Hetland when Knut Helle was seventeen years old. He took the examen artium in Stavanger in 1949, and a teacher's education in Kristiansand in 1952. He studied philology in Oslo and Bergen, and graduated with the cand.philol. degree in 1957. His paper ''Omkring Bǫglungasǫgur'', on the Bagler sagas, was printed in 1959. In December 1957 he married Karen Blauuw, who would later become a professor. Arno Berg
Arno Berg (14 February 1890 – 1 June 1974) was a Swedish born, Norwegian architect and antiquarian. Berg is particularly associated with the preservation of historic building in Oslo. Biography Berg was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. He was the son of Edvard Berg (1859–1912) and Clarita Krüger (1865–1926). He graduated from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in 1914. He was initially employed by architects Andreas Hesselberg Bjercke (1883-1967) and Georg Christen Eliassen (1880-1964) who at this time had won an architectural competition for the entry of a new office building for the head office of Norwegian America Line (''Den norske Amerikalinje'') in Oslo. Berg worked at the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History in Oslo from 1918 to 1927. History The Royal Frederick University in Christiania was established in 1811. The idea of a learned society in Christiania surfaced for the first time in 1841. The city of Trondhjem had no university, but had a learned society, the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters, established in 1760. Stephan Tschudi-Madsen (25 August 1923 – 11 October 2007) was a Norwegian art historian. Tschudi-Madsen was the first antiquarian at the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage from 1959 until 1978 and was Director-general between 1978 and 1991. He was the Advisory President of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) from 1981 to 1990 and ICOMOS Norway President 1978–1992. Early life Tschudi-Madsen was born in Bergen, Norway. He graduated in 1950 from the University of Oslo with a thesis in art history on Romantic architecture. In 1952–1953 he worked as a British Council scholar in London. Tschudi-Madsen received his Ph.D. in 1956.
