Knoxville Center Mall, originally known as East Towne Mall, was a shopping mall located in North Knoxville, Knoxville, Tennessee, North Knoxville, Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee. It was in operation from 1984 to January 2020 and was demolished in 2021. History In 1984, East Towne Mall opened along Interstate 640 in a rapidly growing area  The mall featured anchors such as Miller's, JCPenney, Sears, Profitts, and Service Merchandise, along with a junior anchor, Regal Cinemas. In 1998, Sam's Club inaugurated its southeast corner location within the mall's outlot area. In 1997, the mall underwent a significant renovation led by Simon Property Group. The exterior was retained, but a new entrance was introduced. The interior received upgrades with new tile, paint, trim, and a distinctive Tennessee mountain theme. Interstate 640
Interstate 640 (I-640) is an east–west auxiliary Interstate Highway in Knoxville, Tennessee. It serves as a bypass for I-40 around Downtown Knoxville and is also an alternative route for traffic passing between I-40 and I-75. All trucks carrying hazardous cargo through Knoxville are required to use I-640. It has a total length of and runs approximately north of downtown through the northern neighborhoods of Knoxville. For its first , I-640 has a concurrency with I-75, although exits along this segment are numbered according to the former's mileage. For the rest of its length, the Interstate maintains an unsigned concurrency with U.S. Route 25W (US 25W). Both of these highways were rerouted from their original alignments upon I-640's completion.
