Knattspyrnufélagið Víkingur (, ) , commonly referred to as Víkingur Reykjavík (to distinguish them from Víkingur Ólafsvík) and internationally known as Vikingur F.C., is a professional Icelandic sports club based in the Fossvogur neighbourhood of Reykjavík. It is one of the oldest sports clubs in Iceland, founded on 21 April 1908. Originally founded as a football club, it is now a multi-sport club that also operates divisions in handball, tennis, table tennis, karate and skiing. All sports include both male and female teams. Its men's football team currently plays in the top-tier Besta deildin and has won seven national championship titles and five Cup titles. Úrvalsdeild kvenna (English: Women's Premier League), also known as Olís deild kvenna for sponsorship reasons, is the highest women's team handball, handball competition among clubs in Iceland, where play determines the national champion. The Besta deild karla () is a professional association football league in Iceland and the highest level of the Icelandic football league system. The competition was founded in 1912 as the Icelandic Championship. Because of the harsh winters in Iceland, it is generally played in the spring and summer (April to September). It is governed by the Football Association of Iceland (KSÍ) and has 12 teams. By the end of the 2022–23 season, UEFA ranked the league No. 48 in Europe. From 27 April 2009 to 2022, the league had an active agreement on the league's name rights with Ölgerðin, the Icelandic franchisee for Pepsi. Knattspyrnufélagið Valur (, ) is an Icelandic multi-sport club based in Reykjavík, Iceland. The club is situated close to the city center, in the east side of town, on the former farmland of Hlíðarendi. The club was originally formed as part of the local YMCA to play association football, but later incorporated handball and basketball. Valur's handball section reached the EHF Champions League final in 1980. It has won the Icelandic league 22 times, more than any other Icelandic handball team. In 2019, Valur women's teams won the national championships in basketball, football, and handball, the first time that one club held all three major titles. Emil Thoroddsen (16 June 1898 – 7 July 1944) was an Icelandic composer, pianist, playwright, critic and translator. Axel Andrésson
Axel Andrésson (November 22, 1895 – June 13, 1961) was a pioneer of Icelandic football and founder of football club Víkingur FC. He was the son of Andrés Andrésson tradesman and Kristin Pálsdóttir housewife. Axel was the mainspring for Víkingur Reykjavik in the club's early years, serving as its first chairman and coach from years 1908-1924 and 1930-1932. He was the first to become a licensed football referee at ÍSÍ - National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland. After being appointed as a coach at ÍSÍ in 1941, Axel held various sports workshops throughout Iceland, focusing upon football and handball intertwined with athletics and other sports. Kolbeinn Sigþórsson (; born 14 March 1990) is an Icelandic former professional footballer who played as a forward. Kolbeinn came through Víkingur Reykjavik's youth program and made his professional debut with HK Kópavogur at 16 years of age. In 2007, he moved to the Netherlands to continue his development with AZ Alkmaar. A successful debut season in the Eredivisie prompted a transfer to Ajax in 2011, where he became a first team regular. In 2015, he joined Nantes in Ligue 1; injuries, however, hindered his spell at the club, which included a brief loan to Galatasaray in 2016. After a period in Sweden, playing for AIK and IFK Göteborg, he retired from football in 2021. For the Iceland national team, Kolbeinn made 64 appearances and scored 26 goals between 2010 and 2021.
