Axel Andrésson
Axel Andrésson (November 22, 1895 – June 13, 1961) was a pioneer of Icelandic football and founder of football club Víkingur FC. He was the son of Andrés Andrésson tradesman and Kristin Pálsdóttir housewife. Axel was the mainspring for Víkingur Reykjavik in the club's early years, serving as its first chairman and coach from years 1908-1924 and 1930-1932. He was the first to become a licensed football referee at ÍSÍ - National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland. After being appointed as a coach at ÍSÍ in 1941, Axel held various sports workshops throughout Iceland, focusing upon football and handball intertwined with athletics and other sports. In the workshops, Axel introduced new ideas and specific methods to coaching, later to become synonymous with him as the "Axel-Systems".Mbl.is Memorial. Knattspyrnufélagið Víkingur, commonly referred to as Víkingur or Víkingur Reykjavík (to distinguish them from Víkingur Ólafsvík) and internationally known as Vikingur F.C., is an Icelandic sports club based in the Fossvogur neighbourhood of Reykjavík. It is one of the oldest sports clubs in Iceland, founded on 21 April 1908. The football club has won six Championship titles, five First Division titles and four Cup titles. Víkingur operates other sports divisions including handball, tennis, table tennis, karate and skiing. All sports include both male and female teams. The National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland ( is, Íþrótta- og Ólympíusamband Íslands) (abbreviated ÍSÍ) is the National Olympic Committee representing Iceland, and the highest authority for sporting activity in the country. The main tasks of the ÍSÍ are to promote, coordinate and organize sporting activities in Iceland, as well as to promote the development of sport, as well as public sport events.
