Klosterøy
Klosterøy is an island in Stavanger municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The island lies on the south side of the Boknafjorden in the Rennesøy island group. It lies immediately north of the island of Fjøløy and immediately west of the island of Mosterøy (island), Mosterøy. All three islands are connected by bridges and Mosterøy is connected to the island of Sokn which in turn is connected to the Stavanger (city), city of Stavanger on the mainland by the Byfjord Tunnel. Klosterøy island is notable since it is the location of the historic Utstein Abbey and the 800-year old Utstein Church. Most of the island is agriculture, agricultural land, with most residents living on the far eastern end of the island, along the small channel separating the island from Mosterøy. Rennesøy
Rennesøy is a former municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. It was merged into Stavanger municipality on 1 January 2020. It was located in the traditional district of Ryfylke. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Vikevåg. Other villages in Rennesøy included Askje and Sørbø. The municipality encompassed a number of islands on the south side of the Boknafjorden, north of the city of Stavanger. At the time of its dissolution, the municipality was the 404th largest by area out of the 422 municipalities in Norway. Rennesøy was the 207th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 4,892. The municipality's population density is and its population has increased by 38.7% over the last decade. Utstein Abbey
Utstein Abbey () is Norway's best-preserved medieval monastery. It is located on the southern shore of the island of Klosterøy in Stavanger municipality, Rogaland county. It was built in the late 1200s. Utstein Church is located on the grounds of the abbey. {{CC-notice, by History The abbey, dedicated to Saint Laurence, was founded in its present location during the reign of King Magnus VI of Norway (1263–1280). It was a house of Augustinian Canons. It appears however that this community was the one previously established as St. Olav's Abbey, Stavanger, one of the earliest Augustinian monasteries in Norway if not the very earliest. The exact date of its foundation is unknown, but it was well established by 1160. Fjøløy is an island in Stavanger municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The island lies on the south side of the Boknafjorden in the Rennesøy island group. The island lies immediately south of the island of Klosterøy and west of the island of Mosterøy. The island is connected to the mainland city of Stavanger by a series of bridges and tunnels. Mosterøy (island)
Mosterøy is an island in Stavanger municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The island lies just southwest of the island of Rennesøy. The smaller islands of Sokn, Bru, and Åmøy lie to the south of Mosterøy and the islands of Klosterøy and Fjøløy lie to the west of Mosterøy. All of these islands are connected together and to the mainland city of Stavanger by a series of undersea tunnels and bridges. The Mastrafjord Tunnel connects Mosterøy to the island of Rennesøy and the Askjesund Bridge connects Mosterøy to the island of Sokn. Both the tunnel and bridge are part of the European route E39 highway. The island of Mosterøy has been part of Rennesøy municipality for a long time, but in 1884 it became a part of the new municipality of Mosterøy which encompassed the island plus several surrounding islands. Utstein Church
Utstein Church () is a historic parish church of the Church of Norway in the large Stavanger Municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. It is located on the grounds of the historic Utstein Abbey on the island of Klosterøy. It was historically the church for the Mosterøy parish which is part of the Tungenes prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Stavanger. The medieval stone church was built in a long church design around the year 1280 using designs by an unknown architect. The church seats about 300 people. History The construction of the church began in 1263 and the stone church was completed in the year 1280. The church was built on the site of the Utstein Abbey and it was dedicated to Saint Lawrence. The church was given to the Augustinian order by Magnus Lagabøte. Both the nave and chancel are rectangular and of the same size, and between the two parts of the building there is a central tower. Boknafjorden
Boknafjord or Boknafjorden () is a fjord located in Rogaland county, Norway. The huge fjord lies between the cities of Stavanger and Haugesund and dominates the central part of the county. The main part of the fjord is shared between the municipalities of Kvitsøy, Stavanger, Tysvær, Bokn, and Karmøy. There are dozens of smaller fjords that branch off the main part of the fjord, reaching most municipalities in the county. At its longest, the Boknafjord reaches about into the mainland at the innermost point of the Hylsfjorden. Sokn
Sokn is an island in Stavanger municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The island lies in a group of islands on the south side of the Boknafjorden, just east of the city of Stavanger. There are several islands surrounding Sokn: Bru to the southwest, Åmøy to the southeast, and Mosterøy to the north. All three islands are connected to Sokn by bridges, and the undersea Byfjord Tunnel has its northern terminus on the island, connecting all these islands to the mainland.
