Ključ Fortress is a medieval fortress in Bosnia and Herzegovina, above the modern-day town of Ključ. It is located on an elongated slope on high rocks that dominate the valley of the river Sana. Before it was redeveloped, there was a small ancient fortress from Roman times. Etymology In Serbo-Croatian, word ''ključ'' literally means "key". The Ključ Fortress was likely named in reference to the geographical position it had within the Bosnian state territory, located in the border area, where it was "key of Bosnia" ''(ključ Bosne)''. Location and description The fortress complex was nested above the left bank of the Sana, on a steep rugged cliff at an altitude of 521 m, at the place where the Sana enters the narrow gorge between cliffs of Breščica (528 m) and Ljubinska (656 m), in a naturally extremely well defended position. Ključ, Una-Sana Canton
Ključ ( sr-cyrl, Кључ, ) is a town and municipality located in the Una-Sana Canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, an entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The name of the town and the municipality translates to "Key" in English. Geography It is located a short distance south from Sanski Most. The Sana River runs through the municipality. The terrain is heavily forested. History Human settlements have existed in the area long before the Roman Era. The town itself is first mentioned in 1322 in the documents of ban Stjepan II Kotromanić. It was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1463 as the last Royal Bosnian fortress. From 1929 to 1941, Ključ was part of the Vrbas Banovina of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Kljuc was first mentioned in 1322.
