Klaus Neumann (officer)
Klaus Neumann (5 October 1923 – 10 December 2000) was a Leutnant in the Luftwaffe and recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross during World War II. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. As a fighter pilot he was credited with 37 aerial victories—that is, 37 aerial combat encounters resulting in the destruction of the enemy aircraft—achieved in about 200 combat missions. Career Neuman was born on 5 October 1923 in Wettin in the Province of Saxony within the Weimar Republic. Following flight and fighter pilot training, Neumann was posted to 2. '' Staffel'' (2nd squadron) ''Jagdgeschwader'' 51 (JG 51—51st Fighter Wing) which was based on the Eastern Front in early 1943. Wettin, Saxony-Anhalt
Wettin () is a small town belonging to the municipality of Wettin-Löbejün in the Saale District of Saxony-Anhalt (''Saxony-Duchy of Anhalt, Ascania''), in east-central Germany. It is situated on the River Saale, just north of Halle (Saale), Halle. It is known for Wettin Castle, the ancestral seat of the House of Wettin, the former ruling dynasty of Kingdom of Saxony, Saxony, Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, Poland, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Bulgaria. The town and its name are of West Slavs, Slavic origin. Geography Wettin lies in the Saalekreis (Saale District) of the eastern German federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, on the river Saale, which flows into the Elbe further north. Wettin belongs to the municipality of Wettin-Löbejün which borders Saxony-Anhalt's most populous city of Halle-on-the-Saale in the southeast.
