Kisii (also known as Getembe or Bosongo) is a municipality and urban centre in south-western Kenya and the capital of the Kisii County. Kisii Town also serves as major urban and commercial centre in the Gusii Highlands— Kisii and Nyamira counties—and the South Nyanza region and the second largest town in formerly greater Nyanza after Kisumu City. Kisii County is a county in the former Nyanza Province in southwestern Kenya. Its capital and largest town is Kisii. The county has a population of 1,266,860 people. It borders Nyamira County to the North East, Narok County to the South, and Homabay and Migori Counties to the West. The county covers an area of 1,317.5 km. Gucha District
Gucha District was a former district in Nyanza Province, western Kenya. It was also known by the name: South Kisii District or Ogembo District. In 1999, its population was approximately 461,00 Its district headquarters were at Ogembo which houses more than a thousand residents, (people who live in the center of the town), with more than one thousand people more that visit it each day. Agriculture is the main industry. Apart from numerous small family plantations, there are large sugar cane fields. The population is mostly Gusii, but the district borders Maasai land at southeast. Nyamira County is a county in the former Nyanza Province of Kenya. It shares common boundaries with what was known as Nyamira District. The main cash crops grown are bananas and tea. Kisii People
The Abagusii (also known as Kisii (Mkisii/Wakisii) in Swahili, or Gusii in Ekegusii) are a highly diverse East African ethnic group and nation indigenous to Kisii (formerly Kisii District) and Nyamira counties of former Nyanza, as well as parts of Kericho and Bomet counties of the former Rift Valley province of Kenya. The Abagusii are unrelated to the Kisi people of Malawi and the Kissi people of West Africa, other than the three communities having similar sounding names. Gusii Language
The Gusii language (also known as Ekegusii) is a Bantu language spoken in Kisii and Nyamira counties in Nyanza Kenya, whose headquarters is Kisii Town, (between the Kavirondo Gulf of Lake Victoria and the border with Tanzania). It is spoken natively by 2.2 million people (as of 2009), mostly among the Abagusii. Ekegusii has only two dialects: The Rogoro and Maate dialects. Phonologically they differ in the articulation of /t/. Most of the variations existing between the two dialects are lexical. The two dialects can refer to the same object or thing using different terms. Example Cat. While one dialect calls a cat ekemoni, the other calls it ekebusi. Kisii University
Kisii University is a public university located in Kisii. It was founded in 1965 as a primary teachers’ training college on a 61-acre land that was donated by the County Council of Gusii. The college continued up to 1983 when it was upgraded to a secondary teachers’ college to offer Diploma programmes. History The Government of Kenya mandated the university to take over the college as its campus in 1994. Kisii Campus was one of the earliest campuses to be created in Kenya by the then Head of State, H.E. Daniel arap Moi. In 1999, the Faculty of Commerce established a Bachelor of Business and Management as its first degree programmes within the campus to run alongside a postgraduate Diploma in Education, which was phased out in 2001.
