USS Kirwin (APD-90)
USS ''Kirwin'' (APD-90), ex-DE-229, later LPR-90, was a United States Navy high-speed transport in commission from 1945 to 1946 and from 1965 to 1969. Namesake John Joseph Kirwin was born on 4 July 1918 in Newport, Rhode Island. He enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve on 11 December 1935. He was appointed midshipman on 11 August 1937, and commissioned as an ensign on 7 February 1941, reporting for duty aboard light cruiser . During World War II, Kirwin was appointed Lieutenant, junior grade, on 16 June 1942, and saw action aboard ''Savannah'' in the Battle of the Atlantic and in Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 December 1942, and saw further combat aboard ''Savannah'' in Operation Husky, the Allied invasion of Sicily. Kirwin, Wyoming
Kirwin is a ghost town in Park County, Wyoming, United States. Its post office has been closed. The former mining town is a historic site. Amelia Earhart was having a cabin built there before her disappearance. History Kirwin is located at the headwaters of Wood River and is surrounded by several 12,000-foot peaks. The area's first prospectors, a group of 130 men, arrived in 1870 led by William Kuykendall. The prospectors were made to leave by soldiers from Fort Bowman or possibly Camp Brown due to the area being a part of a treaty with the Shoshone tribe. One of the prospectors, John Henry, was killed after splitting off from the group to hunt buffalo. Its origins as a town trace back to 1885 when Harry Adams, and the town's namesake, William Kirwin found gold and silver while hunting deer in the area. Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge
Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge of the United States located in Kansas. It was established in 1954 for the conservation and management of wildlife resources, particularly migratory birds. The Kirwin Dam was built in the early 1950s near Kirwin, Kansas, and the reservoir created in the process provides water to the refuge. Ecology The refuge is located along the North Fork of the Solomon River in the region where tallgrass prairie meets shortgrass prairie on the Great Plains. This merging of grassland types brings a diversity of flora and fauna to the area. Other habitat types include wetlands and cropland. More than 300 species of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish inhabit the refuge. Four federally listed and two state-listed threatened and endangered species of birds can be observed. Dominick Kirwin
Dominick Kirwin was an Irish Confederate, ? Kirwin was a member of one of The Tribes of Galway, and led the raiding party that seized a ship anchored near Galway early in the morning of 19 March 1642. It was a British naval vessel under the command of a Captain Clarke, and had been sent to reinforce the garrison situated at Forthill, overlooking the town. The garrison and its commander, Captain Anthony Willoughby, had been harassing the locals and bombarding the town on a regular basis for several weeks, and negotiations had been held between Willoughby and Walter Lynch, with the Earl of Clanricarde acting as mediator. Shortly before nine a.m., Kirwin led a group of men including Brian Roe Mahon Móre, Walter Óge Martyn and other natives of the town. They rowed out to the ship on pretense of selling goods, but were fully armed and within minutes seized the ship, killing two of the crew and injuring several others.
