Kiri Territory
Kiri Territory is an administrative region of Mai-Ndombe Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The headquarters is the town of Kiri. Location Kiri territory has sandy clay soils, supporting food crops that include cassava, maize, banana, peanut, yams, sweet potatoes, sugarcane, rice, beans, vegetables, robusta coffee, cocoa and palm. Most of the land is covered with rain forest. The southern boundary is defined by the Lokoro River, which flows from the southeast, entering Lake Mai-Ndombe at the westernmost point of the territory. Kiri Territory is divided into the Beronge, Lutoy and Pendjwa sectors. Economy The Kiri General Hospital was rehabilitated in 1983, and a farmers cooperative was established in 1995. As of 1997 Kiri Territory had a population of 121,604 within an area of , or about 11 people per square kilometer. Mai-Ndombe Province
Mai-Ndombe is one of the 21 newest provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo created in the 2015 repartitioning when the former Bandundu province was split-up into the new provinces of Mai-Ndombe, Kwango, and Kwilu. Mai-Ndombe was formed from the Plateaux and Mai-Ndombe districts, with the town of Inongo being elevated to the capital city of the new province. The 2024 population was estimated to be 2,291,000. History Mai-Ndombe Province was a separate province from 1962 to 1966, prior the creation of Bandundu Province from the post-colonial political regions of Kwango, Kwilu, and Mai-Ndombe. ''Coffea canephora'' (especially ''C. canephora var. robusta'', so predominantly cultivated that it is often simply termed ''Coffea robusta'', or commonly robusta coffee) is a species of coffee plant that has its origins in central and western sub-Saharan Africa. Lokoro River
The Lokoro River ( French: ''Rivière Lokoro'') is a river in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, one of the largest affluents of Lake Mai-Ndombe. The river originates in the Dekese Territory, then flows west through the Lokolama sector of Oshwe Territory of Mai-Ndombe Province, then northwestward along the boundary between Kiri Territory and Inongo Territory to enter the northern part of Lake Mai-Ndombe. The river runs through extensive areas of permanent swamp forest. When the heavy rains begin in October the river floods and brings oxygenated water and nutrients into the swamp forests. Near the upper Lokolo there is a great intercalary savanna named Ita. This seems to have been the location of a Bolia chiefdom at the end of the fourteenth century. Lake Mai-Ndombe
Lake Mai-Ndombe (, ) is a large freshwater lake in Mai-Ndombe province in western Democratic Republic of the Congo. The lake is within the Tumba-Ngiri-Maindombe area, the largest Wetland of International Importance recognized by the Ramsar Convention in the world. Location The lake drains to the south through the Fimi River into the Kwah and Congo Rivers. Known until 1972 as Lake Leopold II ( French: ''Lac Léopold II''; Dutch: ''Leopold II-meer'') after Leopold II, King of the Belgians. ''Mai-Ndombe'' means "black water" in Kikongo. The lake is of irregular shape and ranges in depth from only 5 meters (mean) to 10 meters (maximum).
