Kalenjin People
The Kalenjin are a group of tribes designated as Highland Nilotes and are descended from Maliri people ''(thus related to Daasanach of Ethiopia.)'' The Kalenjin are cousins with Datooga people of Tanzania and Malawi. In contrast, their designation groups them with other Nilotes including Maasai, Luo, Turkana and Nuer, Dinka among others. They are indigenous to East Africa, residing mainly in what was formerly the Rift Valley Province in Kenya and Eastern slopes of Mount Elgon in Uganda. Upon their arrival in the forest region of Mau, the Kalenjin assimilated the aboriginal hunter-gatherer people known as Okiek. They number 6,358,113 individuals as per the Kenyan 2019 census and an estimated 300,000 in Uganda mainly in Kapchorwa, Kween and Bukwo districts. Albert Kiptoo Yator (6 September 1993 – 5 February 2011) was a Kenyan professional long-distance runner who specialised in the steeplechase. Born in Iten, he was the brother of a former world junior record holder, Raymond Yator. He won his first and only international medal at the 2010 World Junior Championships in Athletics in Moncton, Canada, taking the silver medal in the 3000 metres steeplechase as part of a Kenyan 1–2 with Jonathan Muia Ndiku. Having gained representation with PACE Sports Management, he made his debut on the major European track and field circuit later that year. Benjamin Kolum Kiptoo (born 1979) is a Kenyan professional marathon runner. He has won marathons in Rome, Beijing and Chuncheon, and represented Kenya at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics. He holds a personal best of 2:06:31 for the distance, set en route to victory at the 2011 Paris Marathon. He also holds the fastest ever time recorded on Italian soil (2:07:17), with which he won the 2009 Rome City Marathon. Edwin Kiptoo (born 14 August 1993) is a Kenyan long-distance runner competing in marathon and half marathon events. In 2016, he won the Beirut Marathon with a time of 2:13:19. He also won several half marathon events: the Great Eastern Run and Cardiff Half Marathon in 2011, the Bath Half Marathon in 2012, the Zwolle Half Marathon in 2013 and the Egmond Half Marathon in 2018. Jane Jepkosgei Kiptoo (born 8 August 1982) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who mainly competes in road running events, up to the marathon distance. She was a team silver medallist in the short race at the 2002 IAAF World Cross Country Championships – her only international selection for Kenya. She also competed in track running in the 2008 season and was third in the 3000 metres at the 2008 IAAF World Athletics Final, and also eight in the 5000 metres in a lifetime best time of 15:03.80 minutes. She began competing in European road races in 2000.
