Kings Canyon (Utah)
Kings Canyon is a canyon within the Confusion Range in Millard County, Utah, United States. US Highway 6/US Highway 50 runs through the windy canyon. The area in and around the canyon is unpopulated, and is only used by humans for transportation and some sheep herding. The strongly bedded rocks that line the canyon are chiefly Silurian to Devonian carbonate rocks, though pink Tertiary ignimbrites can also be seen sporadically in places. A side spur of the canyon, called Cat Canyon, is the location of the most famous tourist attraction in the canyon, Elephant Rock which is in the shape of an elephant carrying a pack or load. Confusion Range
The Confusion Range is a north-south trending mountain range in west-central Utah, United States. It is bounded by Snake Valley to the west, Tule Valley to the east, the Great Salt Lake Desert to the north, and the Ferguson Desert to the south. The range trends into the Burbank Hills, Mountain Home Range, and the Wah Wah Mountains to the south. In the central part of the range, an offshoot of the mountains to the west is known as the Conger Range. The Confusion Range is named for its "rugged isolation and confusing topography."Van Cott, J. Millard County
Millard County ( ) is a County (United States), county in the U.S. state of Utah. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 12,975. Its county seat is Fillmore, Utah, Fillmore, and the largest city is Delta, Utah, Delta. History The Utah Territory legislature created the county on October 4, 1851, with territory not previously covered by county creations and including some area in the future state of Nevada. It was named for the thirteenth US President Millard Fillmore, who was in office then. Fillmore was designated as the county seat. The county boundaries were altered in 1852 and again in 1854. U.S. Route 50 or U.S. Highway 50 (US 50) is a major east–west route of the U.S. Highway system, stretching from Interstate 80 (I-80) in West Sacramento, California, to Maryland Route 528 (MD 528) in Ocean City, Maryland, on the Atlantic Ocean. Carbonate rocks are a class of sedimentary rocks composed primarily of carbonate minerals. Ignimbrite
Ignimbrite is a type of volcanic rock, consisting of hardened tuff. Ignimbrites form from the deposits of pyroclastic flows, which are a hot suspension of particles and gases flowing rapidly from a volcano, driven by being denser than the surrounding atmosphere. New Zealand geologist Patrick Marshall (1869–1950) coined the term ''ignimbrite'' from the Latin ''igni-'' [fire] and ''imbri-'' [rain]. Ignimbrites are made of a very poorly sorted mixture of volcanic ash (or tuff when Lithification, lithified) and pumice lapilli, commonly with scattered lithic fragments.
