Kiasma
Kiasma is a contemporary art museum located on Mannerheimintie in Helsinki, Finland. Its name ''kiasma'', Finnish for chiasma, alludes to the basic conceptual idea of its architect, Steven Holl. Kiasma is part of the Finnish National Gallery, and it is responsible for the gallery's contemporary art collection. Its central goal is to showcase contemporary art and to strengthen its status. History The contemporary art collection began as the Museum of Contemporary Art () in 1990. In its earliest stages, the collection was housed in Ateneum. An architectural design competition to design a building for the contemporary arts museum was held in 1992. Finnish National Gallery (, ) is the largest art museum institution of Finland. It consists of the Ateneum, an art museum; Kiasma, a contemporary art museum; and the Sinebrychoff Art Museum, a historic house and art museum. The organization's functions are supported by the conservation department, the administration and services department and Kehys, the art museum development department. The Helsinki Central Library Oodi (; ), commonly referred to as Oodi (), is a public library in Helsinki, Finland. The library is situated in the Kluuvi district, close to Helsinki Central Station and next to Helsinki Music Centre and Kiasma, Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art. Despite its name, the library is not the main library in the Helsinki City Library system, which is located in Pasila instead; "central" refers to its location in the city centre. History A design competition in 2012 to build the library was won by the Finnish architectural firm ALA Architects and structural design by Ramboll Finland. ALA Architects won the commission over 543 other competitors. Søren Dahlgaard (born 1973 in Sorgenfri, Denmark) is a Danish visual artist based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Dahlgaard's work is known for exploring the absurdity and playfulness of everyday life, transforming mundane objects and activities into action sculptures, and environmental and socially engaged art. Career and work Education Søren Dahlgaard was born in 1973 in the suburb Sorgenfri outside Copenhagen, Denmark. He holds a BA (Hons) degree from the Slade School of Fine Arts, University College London, 2002, where he studied under Professor Phyllida Barlow in the Sculpture department. In 2019, he completed a practice-led PhD from The Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, Australia. Architectural Design Competition
An architectural competition is a type of design competition, in which an entity that intends to build new work, or is just seeking ideas, invites architects to submit design proposals. The winning scheme is usually chosen by an independent panel of design professionals and stakeholders (such as government and local representatives, the leadership of a cultural institution, etc.). Ateneum
Ateneum is an art museum in Helsinki, Finland and one of the three museums forming the Finnish National Gallery. It is located in the centre of Helsinki on the south side of Rautatientori square close to Helsinki Central railway station. It has the biggest collections of classical art in Finland. Before 1991 the Ateneum building also housed the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts and University of Art and Design Helsinki. Collections The collections of Ateneum include Finnish art extensively from 18th-century rococo portraiture to the experimental art movements of the 20th century. The collections also include some 650 international works of art. Sinebrychoff Art Museum
The Sinebrychoff Art Museum is an art museum located on Bulevardi in Helsinki, Finland. The museum exhibits the old European art collections (dating between the 14th and 19th centuries) of the Finnish National Gallery. In addition, half of the museum acts as a historic house museum, displaying the 19th century estate of the Sinebrychoff family. History The building housing the museum was constructed in 1842 by the Russian businessman Nikolai Sinebrychoff, whose brewery, Sinebrychoff, operated in the western side of the premises until 1992. Nikolai himself did not live in the house, staying instead in Sveaborg (present-day Suomenlinna). His brother's family lived in the house, and his nephew, Paul, began an art collection. Contemporary art is a term used to describe the art of today, generally referring to art produced from the 1970s onwards.
