Assam Legislative Assembly
The Assam Legislative Assembly is the unicameral legislature of the Indian state of Assam. It is housed in Guwahati, the capital city of Assam, geographically situated in present Western Assam region. The Legislative Assembly comprises 126 Members of Legislative Assembly, directly elected from single-seat constituencies. Its term is five years, unless sooner dissolved. History According to provisions of the Government of India Act 1935, a bicameral legislature of Assam province came into existence in 1937. After the Government of India Act 1935 was passed, it paved the way for the formation of Assam Legislative Assembly, and became a bicameral legislature. Janata Party
The Janata Party ( JP, lit. ''People's Party'') was a political party that was founded as an amalgam of Indian political parties opposed to the Emergency that was imposed between 1975 and 1977 by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of the Indian National Congress. In the 1977 general election, the party defeated the Congress and Janata leader Morarji Desai became the first non-Congress prime minister in independent modern India's history. Raj Narain, a socialist leader, had filed a legal writ alleging electoral malpractice against Indira Gandhi in 1971. On 12 June 1975, Allahabad High Court found her guilty of using corrupt electoral practices in her 1971 election victory over Narain in the Rae Bareli constituency. Jiba Kanta Gogoi
Jiba Kanta Gogoi ( - 2 July 2002) was an Indian National Congress politician from Assam. He served as Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly and twice as minister in the Hiteswar Saikia’s cabinets. Education and early career Gogoi had a degree in law. He was the editor of the Assam Express, Sadiniya Nagarik, The Weekly Express and Natun Asomiya before his entry to politics. He also authored a number of books, including novels, poetry collections and travelogues. Political career Gogoi was the Indian National Congress candidate for the constituency of Khumtai in the 1983 Assam Legislative Assembly Election. He received 934 votes, 94.63% of the total vote. He defeated his nearest opponent by 881 votes and became MLA of the constituency. Asom Gana Parishad
Asom Gana Parishad (translation: ''Assam People's Council'', AGP) is a state political party in Assam, India. The AGP was formed after the historic Assam Accord of 1985 and formally launched at the Golaghat Convention held from 13–14 October 1985 in Golaghat, that let Prafulla Kumar Mahanta to be elected as the youngest chief minister of the state. The AGP has formed government twice from 1985 to 1989 and from 1996 to 2001. Bismita Gogoi
Bismita Gogoi (née Saikia; born 1 January 1972) is an Indian politician from the state of Assam who is currently general secretary of All India Mahila Congress in Assam. Gogoi was the member of Assam Legislative Assembly for Khumtai from 2011 to 2016 and culture minister of Assam from 2015 to 2016. She is a member of the Indian National Congress. Gogoi was born in Moran, Assam and she later did M.A and LLB at Dibrugarh University. She was married to Rupak Gogoi in 1997 before he was killed in 2005.
