Daniel of Kholm (Russian Даниил Дмитриевич Холмский; died in 1493) was a Russian knyaz, boyar and Voivode, voyevoda, one of the most prominent military leaders of Ivan the Great. He belonged to the princely house of House of Kholmsky, Kholmsky and was the father of another voyevoda, Vasily Kholmsky. Biography Daniel of Kholm was the son of the knyaz Dmitry Yurievich Kholmsky and was a descendant of Prince of Tver, Princes of Tver. In the 1460s, he entered the Muscovite service. He became famous after his brilliant victory over Khanate of Kazan, Kazan tatars near Murom in 1468, where he was successful with an unexpected strike from the besieged city. However, since the Tatar assaults on Russian borders continued, the Muscovite army started a campaign against Kazan. Daniel was the commander of the avantgarde troops and defeated khan Ibrahim, forcing him to sign a peace treaty with Ivan III. Prince Vasily Danilovich Kholmsky (russian: Василий Данилович Холмский) (1460s – 1524) was a Russian boyar and Grand Duchy of Moscow, Muscovite Voivode, voyevoda, son-in-law of Grand Prince Ivan III of Russia, Ivan III and son of Prince Daniil Kholmsky. Vasily Kholmsky was a Muscovite nobleman. During the Novgorod campaigns of 1492 and 1495, he was one of the commanders of the so-called Big Regiment () and was noted by Ivan III for his bravery in combat. Ivan would soon admit him to his circle of friends and royal court. In 1500, the grand prince arranged a marriage between Vasily Kholmsky (who was a descendant of appanage princes of Tver) and his second daughter Feodosiya Ivanovna (died February 19, 1501) and bestowed the title of a boyar upon Vasily. Kholm (russian: Холм) is a town and the administrative center of Kholmsky District in Novgorod Oblast, Russia, located at the confluence of the Lovat and Kunya Rivers, north of Toropets, southwest of Staraya Russa, and south of Veliky Novgorod, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: History The Lovat River was a part of the trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks, one of the oldest trading routes passing through Rus'. The settlement was first mentioned in 1144 as Kholmsky pogost (). During the Middle Ages, the town, then a seat of the Princes of Kholm, withstood innumerable sieges by Lithuanians, Poles, and Swedes. In 1777, it was elevated in status to that of an uyezd town of Pskov Viceroyalty and given its present name. In 1796, it was transferred to Pskov Governorate.
