Noise Rock
Noise rock (sometimes called noise punk) is a noise-oriented style of experimental rock that spun off from punk rock in the 1980s. Drawing on movements such as minimalism, industrial music, and New York hardcore, artists indulge in extreme levels of distortion through the use of electric guitars and, less frequently, electronic instrumentation, either to provide percussive sounds or to contribute to the overall arrangement. Some groups are tied to song structures, such as Sonic Youth. Although they are not representative of the entire genre, they helped popularize noise rock among alternative rock audiences by incorporating melodies into their droning textures of sound, which set a template that numerous other groups followed. Other early noise rock bands were Big Black and Swans. Characteristics Noise rock fuses rock to noise, usually with recognizable "rock" instrumentation, but with greater use of distortion and electronic effects, varying degrees of atonality, ...

The Bootlicker
''The Bootlicker'' is the eleventh studio album by the Melvins, released in 1999 through Ipecac Recordings. The album is the second part of a trilogy preceded by '' The Maggot'' and followed by '' The Crybaby''. The trilogy was later released on vinyl by Ipecac (''The Trilogy Vinyl'', IPC-011, November 27, 2000). Production ''The Bootlicker'' was conceived as a more pop-oriented album; ''The Maggot'' was marked by a traditional Melvins metal sound, while ''The Crybaby'' featured many guest appearances. Critical reception The '' Los Angeles Times'' wrote: "While ''The Maggot'' offers more familiar-sounding, metal-tinged sludge, ''The Bootlicker'' is a musically richer collection with rock, funk and jazz underpinnings." The '' Riverfront Times'' called ''The Bootlicker'' "one of the best rock albums of the year: truly beautiful and intelligently (but not pretentiously) presented." '' Tucson Weekly'' called it "subdued, dark and kind of pop-y sounding in spots." Track listing P ...

Whorn
''Whorn'' is the eighth album by the Minneapolis-based noise rock band The Cows. It was released on March 26, 1996, by Amphetamine Reptile Records. Production ''Whorn'' was the band's first time working with Tim Mac since their fourth album ''Peacetika''. During the recording, Tim Mac opted for a "live sound," having the band play together as a whole instead of recording their parts individually. Critical reception ''The Washington Post'' wrote: "This Minneapolis quartet blares and bleats, its shrillness occasionally augmented by the trombone squalls of singer Shannon Selberg, whose playing is almost as atonal as his singing. The band's new ''Whorn'' is perhaps not its most abrasive work, but it's hardly mellow." Track listing Jikan begins with a distorted sample of a Japanese woman speaking, that begins at 0:00 ends at 0:06. The sample is followed by almost 10 minutes of silence (0:06 - 10:06). After the silence, there is a brief hidden track of the band performing a faster ...

Cunning Stunts (Cows Album)
''Cunning Stunts'' is the fifth studio album by the Minneapolis-based noise rock band Cows, released in 1992 by Amphetamine Reptile Records. It was their first album where they began developing real melodies and patterns instead of their usual blasts of noise. The switch to producer Iain Burgess brought an increase in sound quality from previous albums. It was long since out print; however, MVD Audio reissued and distributed the album on CD and a limited edition "Blue Opaque" vinyl LP in 2016. The title is a spoonerism of the term "stunning cunts". The band Caravan used this title for their 1975 album. The album cover design alludes to the Reid Miles designed cover of Eric Dolphy's 1964 album ''Out to Lunch!'' The band supported the album with a North American tour. Critical reception The ''Chicago Sun-Times'' wrote that "the music is jarring and hannonSelberg's howling is initially user-unfriendly, yet his disturbed lyrics are undeniable." The ''Lancaster New Era'' listed ...

Peacetika
''Peacetika'' is the fourth studio album by the Minneapolis-based noise rock band Cows. It was released on March 25, 1991, by Amphetamine Reptile Records. The band supported the album with a North American tour. Critical reception ''Trouser Press'' opined that "the spectacular 'Hitting the Wall' begins the album with pounding and whistling organized mayhem, which the weaker following tracks can't equal." In 2005, ''City Pages'' listed "Hitting the Wall" as one of "Minnesota's Fifty Greatest Hits", writing: "Am-Rep's leading lights corral their mondo-hate-scum-boogie into something like a pop song without diluting Shannon Selberg's stay-away-from-me scream or Thor Eisentrager and Kevin Rutmanis's guitar-bass katzenjammer."
