Kevin Nadal
Kevin Leo Yabut Nadal is an author, activist, comedian, and Distinguished Professor of Psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and The Graduate Center, CUNY, The Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He is a researcher and expert on the effects of microaggressions on racial/ethnic minorities and LGBTQ people. Education & academic career Nadal received Bachelor's degrees in psychology and political science from the University of California, Irvine, a Master's degree in counseling from Michigan State University, as well as a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Columbia University. From 2014 to 2017, Nadal was appointed as the executive director of CLAGS: the Center for LGBTQ Studies (formerly known as Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies). Discrimination based on skin tone, also known as colorism or shadeism, is a form of prejudice and discrimination in which individuals of the same race receive benefits or disadvantages based on the color of their skin. More specifcally, colorism is the process of discrimination marginalizes darker-skinned people over their lighter-skinned counter parts. Historically, colorism on a global scale has colonial roots, ranging from early class hierarchies in Asia to it's impact on Latinos and African Americans through European colonialism and slavery in the Americas. Racial Microaggression
Microaggression is a term used for commonplace verbal, behavioral or environmental slights, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative attitudes toward members of marginalized groups. The term was coined by Harvard University psychiatrist Chester M. Pierce in 1970 to describe insults and dismissals which he regularly witnessed non-black Americans inflicting on African Americans. By the early 21st century, use of the term was applied to the casual disparagement of any socially marginalized group, including LGBT people, poor people, and disabled people. Psychologist Derald Wing Sue defines microaggressions as "brief, everyday exchanges that send denigrating messages to certain individuals because of their group membership".
