In Finland, a person must have a surname and at least one given name with up to four given names permitted. Surnames are inherited either patrilineally or matrilineally, while given names are usually chosen by a person's parents. Finnish names come from a variety of dissimilar traditions that were consolidated only in the early 20th century. The first national act on names came into force in 1921, and it made surnames mandatory. Between 1930 and 1985, the Western Finnish tradition whereby a married woman took her husband's surname was mandatory. Previously in Eastern Finland, this was not necessarily the case. Juha-Pekka Ketola (born January 21, 1983) is a Finnish former professional ice hockey centre. Playing career Born in Rauma, Ketola began his playing career at junior level with his hometown team Lukko, during which he was drafted 287th overall by the New York Islanders in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. Following his draft selection, Ketola sought to gain North American experience and joined the Sherbrooke Castors of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the 2001–02 season. He managed just eight goals in 62 games in his only season in North America before returning to Lukko's junior team the following year. In 2003, Ketola joined Ässät and went on play 83 regular season games over two seasons, scoring three goals and registering one assist. Veli-Pekka Ketola
Veli-Pekka Ketola (born 28 March 1948) is a Finnish former professional ice hockey player and coach. He played 15 seasons in the top flight of ice hockey in Finland, 10 of which were with the Porin Ässät. Ketola retired from professional ice hockey in 1982 after his National Hockey League (NHL) debut season with the Colorado Rockies. Ketola also represented the World Hockey Association (WHA) teams Winnipeg Jets and the Calgary Cowboys. Ketola's jersey number, 13, has been retired by the Porin Ässät and he is 4th in all-time point scoring for the club with 493 points. He was selected to the SM-sarja and SM-liiga all-star team six times in his career. The Liiga top-scorer award is named after Ketola. He won the Kanada-malja championship thrice in his career, twice with Ässät and once with Porin Karhut. Ketola is a one-time Avco Cup champion with the Winnipeg Jets.
