Kendal RUFC
Kendal Rugby Football Club is an English rugby union team based in Kendal, Cumbria. The first XV currently play in Regional 1 North West, a level five league in the English league system, following the club's promotion from North 1 West at the end of the 2021–22 season. History Kendal RUFC was formed in 1905. moving to their present ground at Mint Bridge in 1927. The club found success in the decades before league rugby was introduced in 1987 and the club was placed in North One. By the turn of the century they were in National Division Two, finishing in fourth place in their first season in the third tier of English rugby. In 2002–03 they were relegated for the first time in the club's history and have subsequently dropped down two further levels. Ground Originally based at Maude's Meadow until 1906, Kendal moved to Mint Bridge off Shap Road in 1927. The Cumbria Rugby Union is the sports governing body, governing body for the sport of rugby union in the county of Cumbria in England. The union is the constituent body of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) for Cumbria, and administers and organises rugby union clubs and competitions in the county. It also administers the Cumbria rugby representative teams. History The county that we know of today as Cumbria was originally made up of two separate counties known as Cumberland and Westmorland as well as part of Lancashire called Furness. Cumbria Shield
The Cumbria Shield is an annual rugby union knock-out club competition organized by the Cumbria Rugby Union. It was introduced during the 1888–89 season, when it was known as the Cumberland Challenge Shield, and the inaugural winners were Millom. Initially it was open only to junior club sides in Cumberland (senior sides played in the Challenge Cup) but in 1974, as a result of the Local Government Act 1972, Cumberland, Westmorland and Furness merged to form what we now know as Cumbria, and the competition would ultimately be renamed as the Cumbria Shield. It is the third most important cup competition in Cumbria, behind the Cumbria Cup and Cumbria League Cup. 1999–2000 National League 2 North
The 1999–00 National League 2 North was the thirteenth full season of rugby union within the fourth tier (north) of the English league system, and the last until 2009-10 to use the name National League 2 North. It is counterpart to National League 2 South, which covers the southern half of the country. Kendal finished the season as champions, 5 points clear of second placed Stourbridge, to gain the only promotion spot to the 2000–01 National Division 2 (former National League 1). It was the second year in a row that Stourbridge had to be content with the runners up spot. National League 2 North
National League 2 North is one of three level four leagues in the English rugby union system and provides semi-professional competition for teams in Northern England. The remainder of England is covered by the two counterpart leagues National League 2 East and National League 2 West. The champion club is promoted to National League 1, National One. Relegation is to either the Regional 1 Midlands, Regional 1 North East or Regional 1 North West, depending on their location. Rotherham Titans are the current champions. Before September 2009, it was known as National Division Three North. From 2009 to 2010 the Rugby Football Union (RFU) expanded the league from fourteen to sixteen teams. The Cumbria Cup is an annual rugby union knock-out club competition organized by the Cumbria Rugby Union. It was first introduced during the 1882-83 season, when it was known as the Cumberland Challenge Cup, and the inaugural winners were Aspatria. Originally it was open only to club sides in Cumberland, but in 1974, as a result of the Local Government Act 1972, Cumberland, Westmorland and Furness merged to form what we now know as Cumbria, and the competition was renamed as the Cumbria Cup, although the Westmorland & Furness Cup continued intermittently up until 2008. It is the most important cup competition in the county ahead of the Cumbria League Cup and Cumbria Shield. North Premier
North Premier was a level five league in the English rugby union system, with the fourteen teams drawn from across Northern England. The other leagues at this level were London & South East Premier, Midlands Premier and South West Premier. The RFU reorganised the level five leagues for season 2022–23, with an increase from four to six and reducing the teams in each from fourteen to twelve. The teams in this league now play in either Regional 1 North East or Regional 1 North West. Format The fourteen teams in this league were drawn from across northern England with the champions promoted to National League 2 North and the runner-up going into a play-off with the second placed team from Midlands Premier with the winner also being promoted. Westmorland And Furness Cup
The Westmorland and Furness Cup was a rugby union knock-out club competition first organised by the Westmorland and Furness Rugby Football Unions. The original incarnation of the cup was believed to have been formed in the 1890s around the same time as the better known Cumberland Challenge Cup (now Cumbria Cup) but records of its history are scarce. The modern version of the Westmorland and Furness Cup was first introduced during the 1964–65 season and was won by Windermere. Despite the formation of Cumbria and the Cumbria Rugby Union in 1974, the Westmorland and Furness Cup continued to be held on a fairly regular basis throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In the 1990s the larger clubs in the region tended to field their 'A' sides, instead focusing on the more prestigious Cumbria Cup, and by the 21st century interest in the competition had started to wane and it was cancelled after the 2007–08 season.
