Ken Rowlands
Ken Rowlands (3 July 1927 – 14 August 2011) was a Welsh light heavyweight boxer. Born in Maerdy in the Rhondda Valley Rhondda , or the Rhondda Valley ( cy, Cwm Rhondda ), is a former coalmining area in South Wales, historically in the county of Glamorgan. It takes its name from the River Rhondda, and embraces two valleys – the larger Rhondda Fawr valley ... but fighting out of Luton in England, Rowland's professional career spanned from 1948 to 1958. He first won the Welsh light heavyweight title in 1953, but after losing the title, retook it again in 1955. Maerdy
Maerdy (, cy, Y Maerdy) is a village and community (and electoral ward) in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, and within the historic county boundaries of Glamorgan, Wales, lying at the head of the Rhondda Fach Valley. History "Maerdy" is a Welsh word meaning "house of the STEWARD", and may indicate a medieval origin. The "maer" (steward) was usually appointed by the king; the ''maer biswail'' (literally the "dung steward") was not as important and wielded less authority than the "maer" (''Hen Gyfreithiau Cymreig'', S. J. Williams). "Maerdy" was also used for a 'summer dwelling' as well as for a 'dairy farm' (GPC). The name is found in several locations throughout Wales. Rhondda , or the Rhondda Valley ( cy, Cwm Rhondda ), is a former coal mining, coalmining area in South Wales, historically in the county of Glamorgan. Luton
Luton () is a town and unitary authority with borough status, in Bedfordshire, England. At the 2011 census, the Luton built-up area subdivision had a population of 211,228 and its built-up area, including the adjacent towns of Dunstable and Houghton Regis, had a population of 258,018.
