Keiyo District
Keiyo District (also known as ''Elgeyo district'' or Elgeiyo) is a defunct Districts of Kenya, administrative district in the former Rift Valley Province of Kenya. The district was formed in 1994, when the Elgeyo-Marakwet District was split into two — the other half was Marakwet District. According to the 2009 Kenya Population and Housing Census, Keiyo District had a population of 182,87 Its capital was located in the Iten/Tambach town. In 2010, the districts were re-joined as Elgeyo-Marakwet County. Local people are mostly of the Keiyo tribe. Many famous Kenyan runners come from the district, including Saif Saaeed Shaheen (born Stephen Cherono), Vivian Cheruiyot and Lornah Kiplagat. The world record marathon holder, Kelvin Kiptum, was also from the region. The area is used by local and foreign athletes for high-altitude training. Districts Of Kenya
Sub-counties, formerly known as Districts, are the decentralised units through which government of Kenya provides functions and services. At national level, sub-counties take a more administrative function like security, statistical purposes, provision of government services, etc. Even though the sub-counties are divisions of counties, powers to create new national sub-counties lies with the national government. As of 2023, there are 314 sub-counties, compared to 290 constituencies. A deputy county commissioner is appointed by the state to lead each sub-county. Vivian Cheruiyot
Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot (born 11 September 1983) is a Kenyan Long-distance running, long-distance runner. She represented Kenya at the Athletics at the Summer Olympics, Summer Olympics in 2000, 2008, 2012, and 2016, winning the silver medal in the 5000 metres, 5,000 metres and bronze in the 10,000 metres at the Athletics at the 2012 Summer Olympics, 2012 London Olympics as well as gold in the 5,000 m and silver in the 10,000 m at the Athletics at the 2016 Summer Olympics, 2016 Rio Olympics, setting a new List of Olympic records in athletics, Olympic record in the former. Kimwarer
Kimwarer is a village in Elgeyo-Marakwet County, Kenya. It is located along the B54 Road between Eldoret and Tenges, in the southern part of Kerio Valley and in the drainage basin area of the Kerio River. One of the nearest villages is Kaptagat, located 10 kilometres west of Kimwarer on the Highlands. The nearest larger town, Eldoret, is 50 kilometres west of Kimwarer. Electorally Kimwarer is part of the Soy ward of Keiyo South Constituency and Keiyo County Council. It is the largest village in the Kerio Valley area. Kaptarakwa
Kapatarakwa is a village in Elgeyo-Marakwet County, Kenya. Kaptarakwa is located about 37 km from the town of Eldoret in the Kenyan highlands. Kaptarakwa is about above sea level. Nearby is the Kerio Escarpment which drops down to above sea level. Administratively, Kaptarakwa is a location in the Chepkorio division of Keiyo District. In Kaptarakwa Ward (Ward No 0745) the current MCA is Mathew Cheruiyot (Bwana Leng) . Kenya Fluorspar Company
The Kenya Fluorspar Company is a mining company in Kenya, located in Kimwarer, a village in the southern part of the Kerio Valley in Elgeyo-Marakwet County, that was among the few large-scale mining and metallurgical operations in Kenya, and ranked among the country’s leading foreign exchange earners. It operated as a state corporation between 1971 and 1997 and as a private company between 1997 and 2018. Fluorspar is mined to produce hydrofluoric acid, which is used in various applications such as in refrigerants, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, high-octane gasoline, aluminum, plastics, electrical components, fluorescent light bulbs, ceramic production and optical lens production. Fluorite (also called fluorspar) is the mineral form of calcium fluoride, CaF2. It belongs to the halide minerals. It crystallizes in isometric cubic habit, although octahedral and more complex isometric forms are not uncommon. Saif Saaeed Shaheen
Saif Saaeed Shaheen (), formerly Stephen Cherono (born 15 October 1982), is a retired steeplechase runner. He was born in Keiyo, Kenya but now he represents Qatar. He was, for 19 years, the world record holder for 3000 metre steeplechase. He is a two time World Champion in the event. His older brother Abraham Cherono is also a steeplechase runner. He was the 1999 World Youth Champion in the steeplechase and set a world junior record two years later. He won the steeplechase at the 2002 Commonwealth Games for Kenya but switched allegiance to Qatar in 2003. That year he became world champion in the event, although a dispute with the Kenyan Athletics Federation meant he was ineligible to compete at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Rift Valley Province
Rift Valley Province () of Kenya, bordering Uganda, was one of Kenya's eight provinces, before the 2013 Kenyan general election. Rift Valley Province was the largest and one of the most economically important provinces in Kenya. It was dominated by the Kenya Rift Valley which passes through it and gave the province its name. Keiyo
:''Keiyo may also refer to Keiyo, a district in Kenya, '' Keiyo Line'', a railway line in Japan, or Elgeyo escarpment.'' The Elgeyo (also known as Keiyo) are an ethnic group who are part of the larger Kalenjin ethnic group of Nilotic origin. They live near Eldoret, Kenya, in the highlands of the former Keiyo District, now part of the larger Elgeyo Marakwet County. The Elgeyo originally settled at the foothills of the Elgeyo escarpment, in the area between Kerio river to the east and the escarpment to the west. Due to drought and famine in the valley, the Keiyos climbed the escarpment and started to settle on the highland east of Uasin Gishu plateau. When the British came, the Keiyos were pushed to settle in clusters called reserves.
