Cornelis Bernardus "Kees" Bastiaans (20 November 1909, Mill, Netherlands – 31 March 1986, Mill) was a Dutch painter. He was an Expressionist, often with a religious theme to his work. A self-portrait is a representation of an artist that is drawn, painted, photographed, or sculpted by that artist. Although self-portraits have been made since the earliest times, it is not until the Early Renaissance in the mid-15th century that artists can be frequently identified depicting themselves as either the main subject, or as important characters in their work. With better and cheaper mirrors, and the advent of the panel portrait, many painters, sculptors and printmakers tried some form of self-portraiture. ''Portrait of a Man in a Turban'' by Jan van Eyck of 1433 may well be the earliest known panel self-portrait. He painted a separate portrait of his wife, and he belonged to the social group that had begun to commission portraits, already more common among wealthy Netherlanders than south of the Alps. The genre is venerable, but not until the Renaissance, with increased wealth and interest in the individual as a subject, did it become truly popular. Mill, Netherlands
Mill is a village in the former Dutch municipality of Mill en Sint Hubert, in the province of North Brabant. Since 2022 it has been part of the new municipality of Land van Cuijk. Mill is known from the Battle of Mill, a two-day fight during the German invasion of the Netherlands in 1940. Population On 1 January 2006, Mill had 6,049 inhabitants and was the capital village of the municipality. The municipality house is located in Mill. History In Roman times there was a population center west of the current village center. In the 11th and 12th century people settled near some brooks on the western high ride of the Land van Cuijk. The Lords of Cuijk had quite some possessions in the area. They were closely involved in the foundation of Mariënweerd abbey. During the 14th century, Mill became a village with its own (municipal council and lower court). Het Noordbrabants Museum is an art museum in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. History The Provincial Society for Arts and Sciences ''Het Provinciaal Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen in Noord-Brabant'' (Provincial society for arts and sciences) was founded in 1836. Some of the founding members were the governor of North Brabant Baron Andreas van den Bogaerde van Terbrugge, whose portrait is in the hall of the museum, and Dr. C.R. Hermans, president of the Latin school of 's-Hertogenbosch. The society soon had over 250 members. The purpose of the society was the promotion of arts and sciences. It organized events, contests for research, published books, and created facilities for research, i.e. a library.
