Kees Bakker (zoologist)
Kornelis "Kees" Bakker (28 April 1931, Winterswijk – 3 November 2010, Warmond) was Professor at Leiden University Faculty of Ecology During his PhD research he studied the intra and inter specific competition of Drosophila in detailed lab experiments. After his postdoc period in Silwood Park (Imperial College of London) he returned to Leiden. There he conducted a research program on parasite-host relations, with evolutionairy-ecological subjects like competition, host selection, parasital behaviour, parasital defense systems, optimized food collection behaviour and sex ratio-evolution. He was a member of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen since 1982 and the Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen, Honorary Member of the British Ecological Society and of the Nederlandse Ecologen Vereniging. Winterswijk
Winterswijk (; also known as ''Winterswiek'' or ''Wenters'') is a municipality and a town in the eastern Netherlands. It has a population of and is situated in the Achterhoek, which lies in the easternmost part of the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands. It was also known as ''Winethereswick'', ''Winriswic'' or ''Wenterswic''; the Anglo Saxon '' wich'' or ''wic'' means the living place of a certain person. Warmond
Warmond () is a village and former municipality in the Western Netherlands, north of Leiden in the province of South Holland. The municipality covered an area of 14.42 km² (5.57 mile², 30.7%) of which 4.42 km² (1.71 mile²) is water; had a population of 4,977 in 2004. Together with Sassenheim and Voorhout, it became part of the Teylingen municipality on 1 January 2006. Warmond, which is located in an area called the "Dune and Bulb Region" ( Duin- en Bollenstreek), is notable for being very affluent. Warmond is situated on a lake system called Kagerplassen and has several marinas which make it a popular recreational area for boating and other water sports. Drosophila
''Drosophila'' () is a genus of flies, belonging to the family Drosophilidae, whose members are often called "small fruit flies" or (less frequently) pomace flies, vinegar flies, or wine flies, a reference to the characteristic of many species to linger around overripe or rotting fruit. Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij Der Wetenschappen
The Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities), located on the east side of the Spaarne in downtown Haarlem, Netherlands, was established in 1752 and is the oldest society for the sciences in the country. The society has been housed in its present location, called Hodshon Huis, since 1841. Nearby the society is the Teylers Museum, a closely related museum of natural history founded in 1784. In 2002 the society was awarded the predicate "Royal" when it celebrated 250 years of science studies. British Ecological Society
The British Ecological Society is a learned society in the field of ecology that was founded in 1913. It is the oldest ecological society in the world. The Society's original objective was "to promote and foster the study of Ecology in its widest sense" and this remains the central theme guiding its activities today. The Society had, circa 2013 around 4,000 members of which 14% are students. Of its members, 42% are outside the United Kingdom, in a total of 92 countries. The head office is located in London. History The Society evolved out of the British Vegetation Committee, which was founded in 1904 to promote the survey and study of vegetation in the British Isles.
