Keeler House
The Keeler House was a house in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles. It was completed in 1991 to the designs of American architect Ray Kappe and was destroyed in the January 2025 Palisades Fire. The house was designed in a Modernist style by Kappe for Anne Keeler, a jazz singer, and her husband Gordon Melcher. The couple had originally engaged another architect before they approached Kappe. Keeler was an admirer of Kappe's 1967 residence on Brooktree Road in Pacific Palisades. It was a remodelling of the extant residence on the site. The house was 4,142 sq ft in size with 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The walls and floors of the house were made from concrete; redwood, teak and fir woods were also used throughout the house. Ray Kappe
Ray Kappe (August 4, 1927 – November 21, 2019) was an American architect and educator. In 1972, he resigned his position as Founding Chair of the Department of Architecture at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and along with a group of faculty, students and his wife, Shelly Kappe, started what eventually came to be known as the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). In 2003, Kappe began working with LivingHomes to design modular homes. Kappe remained actively involved in architectural theory and practice in his later years, particularly in the areas of sustainability and the prefabrication of residences. Pacific Palisades is a neighborhood in the Westside region of the city of Los Angeles, California, situated about west of downtown Los Angeles. Modern Architecture
Modern architecture, also called modernist architecture, or the modern movement, is an architectural movement and style that was prominent in the 20th century, between the earlier Art Deco and later postmodern movements. Timber framing () and "post-and-beam" construction are traditional methods of building with heavy timbers, creating structures using squared-off and carefully fitted and joined timbers with joints secured by large wooden pegs.
