Abram Kean
Abram Kean (July 8, 1855 – May 18, 1945) was a sealing captain and politician from Flowers Island, Newfoundland. He was famous for his success in sealing, with capturing over a million pelts, and infamous for his role in sending 78 men to their deaths in the 1914 Newfoundland Sealing Disaster. He embarked upon a career in the Newfoundland cod fishery at the age of 18 but quickly shifted his interests to the seal fishery in which he spent the vast majority of his marine career. Kean was a very relevant part of The Commission of Enquiry report regarding the 1914 Sealing Disaster, which was submitted on February 27, 1915, to Hon. Justice Johnson in St. John's, Newfoundland. In 1917, he was named skipper of the Royal Naval Reserve in St. John's by the British Emperor. In the 1920s and 1930s, he ran in the Newfoundland general elections. Robert Garlick Hill Kean
Robert Garlick Hill Kean (October 7, 1828 – June 13, 1898) was a Virginia lawyer. A Confederate States Army officer and bureaucrat during the American Civil War, he helped promulgate the Lost Cause of the Confederacy after the war, particularly since he became one of the last surviving members of the Confederate States bureaucracy. His wartime diary, published long after his death, provides insights into the inner workings of the Confederate government. Early and family life Kean was born to Caroline M. Kean (1802-1831) on October 24, 1828, at "Mt. Airy" plantation in Caroline County, Virginia, the residence of her father, Col. Humphrey Hill (1766-1841), who in 1820 owned 25 enslaved persons but by 1840 would only own 4 slaves. Robert Kean
Robert Winthrop Kean (September 28, 1893 – September 21, 1980) was an American Republican Party politician and member of one of the nation's oldest and longest serving political families. Kean represented parts of Essex County, New Jersey in the United States House of Representatives from 1939 to 1959. Kean retired from the House to run for United States Senate in 1958 but was defeated by Harrison A. Williams. His son, Thomas Kean, later served as Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly and Governor of New Jersey from 1982 to 1990. Early years Kean was born September 28, 1893, in Elberon, New Jersey. Paul Kean
Toy Love was a New Zealand new wave and punk rock band that originated in Dunedin and was active from 1978 to 1980. Members included Chris Knox, Alec Bathgate and Paul Kean. History Chris Knox was the band's front man and other members were guitarist Alec Bathgate, bass player Paul Kean, drummer Mike Dooley, and keyboard player Jane Walker. The band developed out of the earlier punk band The Enemy from Dunedin, and are often regarded as the progenitors of the Dunedin sound movement. Toy Love were together for less than two years (1978–80) and spent a large part of that time in Australia. They released just one album, which was self-titled ''Toy Love''. Michael Kean
Michael Kean (died 1823) was an Irish artist. He was a miniature painter, and for a period was owner of the porcelain factory in Derby later known as Royal Crown Derby. Life Kean was born in Dublin; he entered the Dublin Society's drawing schools in 1771 and studied ornament, landscape and figure drawing. In 1779 he gained a silver medal of the Dublin Society for drawings of sculpture. Intending to become a sculptor, he was apprenticed to the sculptor Edward Smyth, but he established himself as a miniature portrait painter, moving to London where he practiced successfully. He exhibited at the Royal Academy each year from 1786 to 1790, and at the exhibitions of the Free Society of Artists. Marie Kean (27 June 1918 – 29 December 1993) was an Irish actress of stage and screen whose career spanned over 40 years. ''The Stage'' called her one of Ireland's most impressive actresses, and "an artist of considerable emotional depth and theatrical command." Mark Kean (born June 22, 1988 in Innerkip, Ontario) is a Canadian curler from Woodstock, Ontario. He currently skips his own team out of Ottawa. Career Kean's junior career involved winning the provincial junior mixed title in 2009. Kean made a quick transition to men's curling winning the provincial Colts trophy in 2010 and in 2011 playing in his first provincial tournament. Mallory Kean (née Buist) is a Canadian curler from Woodstock, Ontario. She currently plays second for the Chrissy Cadorin rink on the World Curling Tour. Career Kean began curling at age 7 at the Glendale Golf and Country Club in Hamilton, Ontario. As a junior career, Kean made it to the finals of the Ontario Bantam championship in 2004 (losing to Rachel Homan) and played in the 2004 Ontario Winter Games.
