Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant
The Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant () is a hydroelectric power plant located on the Nemunas River about southeast of Kaunas, Lithuania. It was completed in 1960 and its dam created the Kaunas Reservoir. Owned by Ignitis Group, it operates in conjunction with the Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant. The plant consists of 4 turbines each rated at 25.2 MW for a total power of 100.8 megawatts. It supplies about 4% of the electrical demand in Lithuania, in 2020 its production was 0.23 TWh. Nemunas River
Neman, Nemunas or Niemen is a river in Europe that rises in central Belarus and flows through Lithuania then forms the northern border of Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia's western exclave, which specifically follows its southern channel. Kaunas Reservoir
Kaunas Reservoir (, Kaunas Lagoon, Kaunas Sea) is the largest Lithuanian artificial lake, created in 1959 by damming the Nemunas River near Kaunas and Rumšiškės. It occupies 63.5 square kilometers, which is about 0.1% of the total territory of Lithuania. The reservoir supports the operations of the Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant. Its waters cover the Nemunas valley from the river's confluence with Strėva River to the dam, a distance of about 25 kilometers. At its widest, the reservoir is 3.3 kilometers across and its greatest depth is 22 meters. When the Nemunas was dammed in 1959-1960, the river water rose by 20 metres in 9 months, and at that time there were 35 villages and 700 homes in the flooded area of the lagoon, whose inhabitants were forcibly evicted by the Soviet government. Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant
Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant (the KPSP) is a pumped storage hydroelectric power plant located near Kruonis, Lithuania, east of Kaunas. Its main purpose is to provide grid energy storage. It operates in conjunction with the Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant. During periods of low demand, usually at night, Kruonis PSHP raises water from the lower Kaunas reservoir to the upper one using cheap surplus energy. The station is designed to have an installed capacity of 1,600 MW but only four 225 MW generators are currently operational. With a fully filled upper reservoir the plant can generate 900 MW for about 12 hours. The KPSP uses hydro-resources of artificial water pools existing at different geographical levels.
