Western Highlands Province
Western Highlands is a province of Papua New Guinea. The provincial capital is Mount Hagen. The province covers an area of 4,299 km2, and there are 362,850 inhabitants (2011 census), making the Western Highlands the most densely populated province (apart from the National Capital District). Tea and coffee are grown in the Western Highlands. Split to create Jiwaka Province In July 2009, Parliament passed legislation to create two new provinces by 2012. One of these was to be created by removing Jimi District, North Waghi District, and the South Waghi part of Anglimp-South Waghi District from the Western Highlands Province to form the new Jiwaka Province. Purari River
The Purari (also known as Puraari) is a river that originates in the south central highlands especially in Kandep District of Enga Province of Papua New Guinea, flowing though Gulf Province to the Gulf of Papua. The Purari has a drainage basin and is the third largest river in Papua New Guinea. The discharge varies through the year, averaging around – at the delta. History The headwaters of the river were charted in 1930 by Michael Leahy and Michael Dwyer. Geography It is fed mainly by the Kaugel, Erave, Lai, Tua and Pio rivers, starting just south of Mount Karimui at the junction of the Tua and Pio rivers, where it flows through a quite spectacular gorge before flowing out into the lowlands and delta country closer to the coast. Kaugel Language
Kaugel (Gawigl) is one of the languages spoken in the Southern Highlands province of Papua New Guinea. Native speakers call the area on the Southern Highlands side of the Kaugel River from the Western Highlands province home. Dialects are Aua (Ibo Ugu, Imbo Ungu, Imbongu) and Gawil (Umbo Ungu, Kakoli). Kaugel counts with a base-24 system in cycles of 4.
