Kato Vermio
Kato Vermio (, before 1926: Κάτω Σέλι - ''Kato Seli'', or just ) is, primarily, an Aromanian (Vlach) Greek village and a community of the Veria municipality. Since the 2001 local government reform it is part of the municipality of Veria, of which is a municipal district. The 2021 census recorded 268 residents in the village. The altitude of the village is 1400-1550 meters, making it, probably, the highest populated village in Greece. There are about 1250 households in the village. The community of Kato Vermio-Seli covers an area of 38.915 km2. Geography Seli is located at a distance of 20 km from Veria and 90 km from Thessaloniki, in Imathia, Central Macedonia. The altitude of the village is about 1400 meters, making it, probably, the highest populated village in Greece. Climate Seli has a humid continental climate (Dfb). Macedonian Struggle
The Macedonian Struggle was a series of social, political, cultural and military conflicts that were mainly fought between Greek and Bulgarian subjects who lived in Ottoman Macedonia between 1893 and 1912. From 1904 to 1908 the conflict was part of a wider guerrilla war in which revolutionary organizations of Greeks, Bulgarians and Serbs all fought over Macedonia and its Christian population. Particularly over the national affiliation of the Slavic population which was forced to declare themselves for either of the sides. Gradually the Greek and Bulgarian bands gained the upper hand. Armatoles
The armatoles (; ; ; ), or armatole in singular, were irregular soldiers, or militia, commissioned by the Ottomans to enforce the sultan's authority within an administrative district called an armatoliki ( in singular, , in plural). In Greek regions of the Ottoman Empire, they were composed of Greeks who were either former klephts or village stalwarts who had taken up arms against the klephts in the defense of their district. The Greek armatoles had a semi-independent status all over the Greek peninsula, and armatolikia were created in areas that had high levels of brigandage (i.e. klephts), or in regions that were difficult for Ottoman authorities to govern due to the inaccessible terrain, such as the Agrafa mountains of Thessaly, where the first armatoliki was established in the 15th century. Cola Nicea
Cola Nicea (1886 – ?; Bulgarian language, Bulgarian and Macedonian language, Macedonian: Кола Нича, ''Kola Nicha''; , ) was an Ottoman Empire, Ottoman-born Aromanians, Aromanian Armatoles, armatole revolutionary during the Macedonian Struggle. He was part of the first Aromanian band of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO), leading it as voivode for a time. Once the conflicts in Macedonia (region), Macedonia ended, Nicea emigrated to Kingdom of Romania, Romania. During the last years of his life, Nicea wrote ''Memorii'' ("Memoirs"), one of the only first-hand accounts on the Aromanian fighters during the conflicts in Ottoman Macedonia. It provides valuable information on the identity and motivations of these Aromanians and on their collaboration with the IMRO, as well as on the ethnic dynamics of the time. Vermion Mountains
The Vermio Mountains (), known in antiquity as the Bermion (), is a mountain range in northern Greece. It lies between the Imathia Regional Unit of the Central Macedonia Region and the Kozani Regional Unit of the Western Macedonia Region. The range is west of the plain of Kampania. The town of Veria, which is the capital of Imathia, is built on the foot of these mountains. The highest point in the range is the peak Chamiti (), elevation, west of Naousa.
