Kathleen Shannon Award
The Kathleen Shannon Award is presented by the Yorkton Film Festival. History In 1947 the Yorkton Film Council was founded. In 1950 the first Yorkton Film Festival was held in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada. During the first few festivals, the films were adjudicated by audience participation through ballot casting and winners were awarded Certificates of Merit by the film festival council. In 1958 the film council established the Yorkton Film Festival Golden Sheaf Award for the category Best of Festival, awarded to the best overall film of the festival. Over the years various additional categories were added to the competition. As of 2020, the Golden Sheaf Award categories included: Main Entry Categories, Accompanying Categories, Craft Categories, and Special Awards. Yorkton Film Festival
Yorkton Film Festival (YFF) is an annual film festival held in late May in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Canada. In 1947, the Yorkton Film Council (YFC) was founded and in 1950 the first international documentary film festival officially opened in western Canada on 11 October. The festival originally was named Yorkton International Documentary Film Festival and latter become known as Yorkton International Film Festival. In 1969, the Yorkton Film Council disbanded and the Yorkton International Film Festival Society was formed. The film festival went through several name changes and currently operates as Yorkton Film Festival. It is known as the longest running film festival held in North America. The festival is open to Canadian productions, or international productions directed by Canadians, and focuses on films that are under 60 minutes in length. Claire Prieto
Claire Prieto (born 1945) is a Canadian film director and producer, known as one of the first black filmmakers in Canada. Along with Roger McTair, Prieto was a partner in the Toronto-based production company, Prieto-McTair Productions, which operated from 1982 to 2007. Early life Prieto was born in Trinidad in 1945. Selwyn Jacob
Selwyn Jacob is a Canadian documentary filmmaker whose work has often explored the experiences of Black Canadians as well as other stories from Canada's multicultural communities, as both as an independent director and since 1997 as a producer with the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). Background Selwyn Jacob was born in Trinidad, West Indies in 1941. Jacob attended a teacher's college there before traveling to Canada in 1968 to complete a Bachelor of Education at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. While in Edmonton, he was influenced and mentored by film producer, author and broadcaster Fil Fraser. After graduation, Jacob completed a master's degree in film studies at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. The Road Taken
''The Road Taken'' is a 1996 documentary about the experiences of Black Canadian sleeping-car porters who worked on Canada's railways from the early 1900s through the 1960s. Directed by Selwyn Jacob and written and narrated by Frederick Ward, the film explores how racism prevented Blacks from being promoted, until porter Lee Williams took his fight to the union in 1955 and successfully claimed discrimination under Canada's Fair Employment Practices Act. The film features the music of jazz musician Joe Sealy, whose father was a porter. Christine Welsh
Christine Welsh is a Métis Canadian filmmaker, feminist and associate professor at the University of Victoria. Early life Welsh was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan. She is the great-grand-daughter of Norbert Welsh, the famous Metis buffalo hunter. Education Welsh graduated from University of Regina, with a B.A. in 1986. Career Welsh has produced, written and directed films for more than 30 years. In 1977, Welsh's career began as an assistant editor on Allen Kings ''Who Has Seen the Wind'' film. Welsh moved to Vancouver Island after working as a film editor in Toronto for ten years. Yvan Patry
Yvan Patry (1948–1999) was a Canadian documentary filmmaker. Yvan was born in Iroquois Falls, Ontario. During the 1970s he worked as a professor at Montmorency College in Laval, Quebec, where he produced several educational films. Yvan's short film ''Octobre 68'' was included in the SRC's public television series "Les temps changent". The NFB produced his first feature ''Ainsi soient-ils'' - a fiction film centered on Quebec youth and the new cultural mentality that came about after 1968. In 1974 Yvan Patry teamed with Bernard Lalond, Roger Frappier, Guy Bergeron, and André Gagnon to direct ''On a raison de se révolter'', a film on workers' conflicts that was intended to politicize Quebec workers.
