Kastoria (, ''Kastoriá'' ) is a city in northern Greece in the modern regions of Greece, region of Western Macedonia. It is the capital of Kastoria (regional unit), Kastoria regional unit, in the Geographic regions of Greece, geographic region of Macedonia (Greece), Macedonia. It is situated on a promontory on the western shore of Lake Orestiada, in a valley surrounded by limestone mountains. The town is known for its many Byzantine Empire, Byzantine churches, Byzantine architecture, Byzantine and Ottoman architecture, Ottoman-era domestic architecture, its lake and its fur clothing industry. Name In the 6th century, the historian Procopius wrote the name Kastoria was used for the lake. The first reference to the town of Kastoria is by historian John Skylitzes writing about the late 10th century. Kastoria (, ''Perifereiakí Enótita Kastoriás'') is one of the 74 regional units of Greece and is part of the modern regions of Greece, region of Western Macedonia. Its capital is the homonymous city of Kastoria. Geography Kastoria is situated at the western end of Macedonia (Greece), Macedonia in the far north of the country. It borders the regional units of Florina (regional unit), Florina to the north, Kozani (regional unit), Kozani to the southeast, Grevena (regional unit), Grevena to the south and Ioannina (regional unit), Ioannina to the southwest. Lake Orestiada
Lake Orestiada or Lake of Kastoria ({{langx, el, Λίμνη Ορεστιάδα) is a lake in the Kastoria regional unit of Macedonia, northwestern Greece. It spreads out in a natural basin, surrounded by mountains and is the remnant of a huge ancient Miocene lake that reached an area of 164 square kilometres and at a depth of 50 meters. Sitting at an altitude of 630 metres, the lake covers an area of 28 square kilometres with a coastline that reaches 34 km. The maximum depth of the lake reaches about 9 meters and the average depth 4.5 meters. To the north-east rises Mount Vitsi, to the north-west Mount Triklarios and to the south-west spread the foothills of Voios. Mesopotamia (, before 1926: Τσετιράκι – ''Tsetiraki''; Bulgarian/ Macedonian: ) is a village and since the 2011, a municipal unit of Kastoria Municipality, in Kastoria regional unit, Macedonia, Greece. The municipal unit has an area of 99.173 km2 with a population of 3,855 according to the 2021 Greek census. The community consists of the villages Mesopotamia and Kolokythou. History & Geography The village seems to be populated from the 15th century, eleven kilometers west of Kastoria. Mesopotamia was built in the middle of the flatland between the rivers of Haliacmon and Vrochopotamos, which springs at the peak of Alevitsa mountain from the Grammos mountain range. At the end of the 19th century, there was a mosque and two Christian churches, while there were Ottoman, Greek and Bulgarian schools. Makednoi () is a municipal unit of Kastoria municipality in the Kastoria regional unit, Western Macedonia, Greece. Until the 2011 local government reform it was a separate municipality. The municipal unit has an area of 37.614 km2, and a population of 2,967 (2021). The seat of the former municipality was in Mavrochori. Kleisoura, Kastoria
Kleisoura (formerly Vlachokleisoura; , also Βλαχοκλεισούρα, ''Vlachokleisoúra''; or ) is a traditionally Aromanian (Vlach) settlement and a former municipality in Kastoria regional unit, Macedonia, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform, it is part of the municipality of Kastoria, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 37.069 km2 and a population of 223 (as of 2021).
