Wookiees () are fictional humanoid Extraterrestrial life, aliens in the ''Star Wars'' universe, native to the forest planet #Home planet, Kashyyyk. They are distinguished from humans by their gigantism, hirsutism, and physical strength. The most prominent Wookiee in the films is Chewbacca, the co-pilot of the ''Millennium Falcon'', and best friend to Han Solo. Inspiration According to an interview with creator George Lucas, the inspiration for the Wookiee was Lucas's dog, Indiana (whose name is used in Lucas's Indiana Jones movies): "He was the prototype for the Wookiee. He always sat beside me in the car. He was big, a big bear of a dog." Chewbacca
Chewbacca ( ), nicknamed "Chewie", is a fictional character in the ''Star Wars'' franchise. He is a Wookiee—a tall, hairy, highly intelligent species originating from the planet Kashyyyk. He is tall, and typically wears only a bandolier and a tool pouch. He carries a bowcaster, a traditional Wookiee weapon, and he speaks the Wookiee language Shyriiwook. He first appears in the original ''Star Wars'' film as the loyal friend of the smuggler Han Solo. He is also the co-pilot of Han's starship, the '' Millennium Falcon''. Shyriiwook
''Star Wars'', a space opera franchise created by George Lucas, features various fictional languages throughout its setting. The ''lingua franca'' of the franchise is known in-universe as Galactic Basic, which refers to the language of the film or work itself, be it English or a language that the work was dubbed or translated into. Characters often speak languages other than Basic, notably Shyriiwook spoken by Chewbacca and other Wookiees, droidspeak spoken by R2-D2 and BB-8, Ewokese spoken by Ewoks, and Huttese spoken by Jabba the Hutt. None of these language names appear in the ''Star Wars'' films themselves.
