The territories of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are administrative divisions of provinces. Territories are further divided into sectors, chiefdoms, and communes. They are led by an administrator and, for the most part, take the name of the town that is their administrative center. Overview The 25 provinces of DR Congo are divided into 145 territories (fr. ''territoires'', sing. ''territoire'') and 33 cities (fr. ''villes'', sing. ''ville''). Each provincial division is also a constituency of the National Assembly as well as of the Provincial Assembly of its province. Each territory is led by a territory administrator (fr. Haut-Katanga Province
Haut-Katanga (French for "Upper Katanga") is one of the 21 provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo created in the Subdivisions of the DR Congo#New provinces, 2015 repartitioning. Haut-Katanga, Haut-Lomami, Lualaba Province, Lualaba, and Tanganyika Province, Tanganyika provinces are the result of the dismemberment of the former Katanga Province, Katanga province. Haut-Katanga was formed from the Haut-Katanga District, Haut-Katanga district and the independently administered cities of Likasi and Lubumbashi. Lubumbashi retained its status as a provincial capital, and as of 2020, it had an estimated population of 5,718,800. The new province's territory corresponds to the historic Katanga-Oriental that existed in the early period after History of the Democratic Republic of the Congo#Independence and the Congo Crisis (1960–65), independence between 1963 and 1966.
