Karuna Group
Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP; , ), formerly known as the "Karuna Group", is a political party in Sri Lanka. It was formed by Karuna Amman (Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan), a former leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, after he defected from the organization in 2004. Initially a paramilitary group that supported the Sri Lankan government in its Sri Lankan civil war, fight against the Tamil Tigers, the TMVP was registered as a political party in 2007. Under deputy leader Pillayan (Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan), they contested their first 2008 Sri Lanka Eastern Provincial Council elections, provincial elections in 2008, winning a majority in the Eastern Provincial Council. Members of the TMVP continued to carry arms until at least 2008 under the auspices of the Sri Lankan government, which they claimed to be for their own safety from the Tamil Tigers. Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan
Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan (Tamil language, Tamil: சிவனேசதுரை சந்திரகாந்தன்; commonly known as Pillayan; born 18 August 1975) is a Sri Lankan politician who served as Chief Minister of the Eastern Province, Sri Lanka, Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. He is also the leader of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP), a political party in Sri Lanka. A former armed fighter of the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam organization, Chandrakanthan broke away from the Tamil Tigers along with Karuna Amman in April 2004, and became the deputy leader of the breakaway faction, renamed as the TMVP. An internal rift in the TMVP led to Chandrakanthan replacing Karuna as the party leader in April 2007. Eastern Provincial Council
The Eastern Provincial Council (EPC ''Kiḻakku Mākāṇa Capai''; “Nagenahira Palat Sabava”; EPC) is the provincial council for the Eastern Province in Sri Lanka. In accordance with the Sri Lankan constitution, EPC has legislative power over a variety of matters including agriculture, education, health, housing, local government, planning, road transport and social services. The constitution also gives it powers over police and land but successive central governments have refused to devolve these powers to the provinces. Kumaraswamy Nandagopan
Kumaraswamy Nanthakopan ( Tamil: குமாரசுவாமி நந்தகோபன்; 1976 – November 14, 2008), also known as his ''nom de guerre'' Ragu, was the president of the political party of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal in Sri Lanka, a defecting offshoot of the LTTE and advisor to Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan. Eastern Province (Sri Lanka)
The Eastern Province ( ''Næ̆gĕnahira Paḷāta'' , ''Kiḻakku Mākāṇam'') is one of the nine provinces of Sri Lanka, the first level administrative division of the country. The provinces have existed since the 19th century but did not have any legal status until 1987 when the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka established provincial councils. Eelam National Democratic Liberation Front
The Eelam National Democratic Liberation Front (ENDLF) was a former Indian backed Tamil militant group in Sri Lanka. It was formed in 1987 as an amalgamation of splinter groups from other militant groups ( Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front, People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam, Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization). Vellupillai Prabhakaran
Velupillai Prabhakaran (; ; ; 26 November 1954 – 18 May 2009) was a Sri Lankan guerrilla and a major figure of Tamil nationalism, being the founder and leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Ranil Wickremesinghe (; ; born 24 March 1949) is a Sri Lankan politician who served as the ninth president of Sri Lanka from 2022 to 2024. Presidential elections were held in Sri Lanka on 21 September 2024.
