Kars River
The Kars is a river in the Kars Province in northeastern Turkey. This 93 km long river is the largest tributary of the Akhuryan river. Geography The Kars river originates in the Allahuekber Mountains in the southwest of the Kars province. Initially, the river flows in a predominantly easterly direction through the Selim District. Then it turns north and flows through Kars. It then flows in a wide arc to the north, later to the east and then to the southeast. Kars
Kars (; ku, Qers; ) is a city in northeast Turkey and the capital of Kars Province. Its population is 73,836 in 2011. Kars was in the ancient region known as ''Chorzene'', (in Greek Χορζηνή) in classical historiography ( Strabo), part of Kingdom of Armenia (antiquity), in Ayrarat province, and later the capital of Bagratid Kingdom of Armenia in 929–961. Currently, the mayor of Kars is Türker Öksüz. The city had an Armenian ethnic majority until it was conquered by Turkish nationalist forces in late 1920. Akhuryan (river)
The Akhuryan ( hy, Ախուրյան ''Axuryan''; xcl, Ախուրեան ''Axurean''; russian: Арпачай or Ахурян), or Arpachay ( tr, Arpaçay) is a river in the South Caucasus. It originates in Armenia and flows from Lake Arpi, along the closed border with Turkey, forming part of the geographic border between the two states, until it flows into the Aras as a left tributary near Bagaran. Kars Province
Kars Province ( tr, Kars ili; ku, Parêzgeha Qersê; hy, Կարսի նահանգ) is a province of Turkey, located in the northeastern part of the country. It shares part of its closed border with Armenia. The provincial capital is the city of Kars. The provinces of Ardahan and Iğdır were until the 1990s part of Kars Province. Allahuekber Mountains
Allahuekber Mountains ( tr, Allahuekber Dağları, which means " Allahu akbar Mountains"), is a mountain range in northeastern Turkey. The Kızılırmak River winds through it. It is part of the Pontic Mountains. When World War I began in 1914, the range was astride the border between the Ottoman Empire and the Russian Empire. Turkish troops suffered a disaster during the Battle of Sarikamish, when they were ordered to recapture the Kars area, which was then part of the Russian Empire. Thousands of Turkish soldiers died of hypothermia in the winter snow of the Allahuekber Mountains. Akhurian Reservoir
Akhurian Reservoir ( hy, Ախուրյանի ջրամբար; tr, Arpaçay Baraj Gölü) is a reservoir on the Akhurian River between Armenia and Turkey. The reservoir has a surface area of 54 km² and a volume of 525 million cubic meters. It is one of the largest reservoirs in the Caucasus, smaller than the Mingachevir reservoir and the Shamkir reservoir in Azerbaijan. Its water is used for irrigation in Armenia's Aragatsotn, Armavir and Shirak provinces.
