Karo People (Ethiopia)
Karo (also Cherre, Kere, Kerre, Kara) is a South Omotic languages, Omotic language spoken in the Debub Omo Zone, Debub (South) Omo Zone of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People's Region in Ethiopia. Karo is described as being closely related to its neighbor, Hamer language, Hamer-Banna, with a lexical similarity of 81%, and is considered a dialect of Hamer by Blench (2006), but as a separate language belonging to the ''Hamer-Karo'' subfamily in Glottolog. The Karo people, who live close to the lower Omo River, use colorful bodywork, complex headdresses and body scars to express beauty and importance within the community. 2,400 speakers are using the Karo language. It has rough, hard, fissured bark on the trunk and smooth greyish bark on the branches, narrow lance-shaped adult leaves, flower buds in groups of seven, white flowers and hemispherical or cup-shaped fruit. Karo (official spelling: ''KARO'') was a German brand of filterless cigarettes, owned and manufactured by Altria (previously by Philip Morris International). Karo is the German word for "diamond" (a suit of cards). History Karo was originally launched as ''Carré'' in the early 1960s but was later "Germanized" into "Karo". Karo cigarettes were formerly produced in East Germany by the ''VEB Zigarettenfabriken Dresden'', and because they were produced in the German Democratic Republic, the cigarette was made only from tobacco without added perfumes, fragrances, or flavor enhancers.
