Karl Albert Hasselbalch
Karl Albert Hasselbalch (; 1 November 1874 – 19 September 1962) was a Danish physician and chemist known for his work on the Henderson–Hasselbalch equation. Early life and education Hasselbalch was born in Åstrup, near Hjørring, Denmark on 1 November 1874. His parents were landowner and lawyer Hans Peter Jansen Hasselbalch (1843–1916) and Hedevig Alberta Rebekka Spärck (1845–76). In 1879, his father remarried to Wilhelmine Marie Koppel (1858–1950=- Hasselbalch received his medical degree in 1898 and his doctorate in 1899 for his thesis on the respiratory metabolism in the chicken embryo. Career Hasselbalch was a pioneer in the use of pH measurement in medicine (with Christian Bohr, father of Niels Bohr), and he described how the affinity of blood for oxygen was dependent on the concentration of carbon dioxide. Gustav Adolph Hagemann
Gustav Adolph Hagemann (16 May 1842 – 26 April 1916) was a Danish engineer and businessman. He was chief technical officer of the De Danske Sukkerfabrikker, Danish Sugar Factories from 1872 to 1897 and then served as chairman of the board until 1916. He owned several sugar plantations on Saint Croix in the Danish West Indies. Early life and education Hagemann was born on the Rodsteenseje estate at Odder in 1842, the son of Otto Waldemar Hagemann (1809–1890) and Sophie Marie Poulsen (1815–1901). His father owned the estate until 1857 when he returned to Holstein. Grønnessegaard
Grønnessegaard is a manor house and estate located just east of Hundested in Halsnæs Municipality, Denmark, some northwest of Copenhagen. The estate was established by Johan Frederik Classen in 1776. The two-storey main building is from 1859. History Johan Frederik Classen and his partner Just Fabritius had established the nearby Frederick's Works arms factory in 1756. The town of Frederiksværk had formed around the factory. Over the years Classen had also acquired the surrounding land from the crown. He established Arresødal in 1773. In 1776, he also merged the villages of Gryndese, Rorup and Fornerup into another manor named Grønnessegaard. Lawrence Joseph Henderson (June 3, 1878 – February 10, 1942) was an American physiologist, chemist, biologist, philosopher, and sociologist. He became one of the leading biochemists of the early 20th century. His work contributed to the Henderson–Hasselbalch equation, used to calculate pH as a measure of acidity.
