Karim Van Overmeire
Karim Van Overmeire (born 14 October 1964) is a Flemish politician, author, city planner and member of the New Flemish Alliance party. Karim Van Overmeire has a law degree from the University of Ghent. In 1990, he became a board member of the ''Vlaams Blok Jongeren,'' the youth wing of the former Vlaams Blok party, in East Flanders and from 1992 to 1995 he was national chairman of the VBJ. In 1991, he was elected to the Belgian Chamber of Representatives for Vlaams Blok and in 1995, became a member of the Flemish Parliament for Vlaams Blok and later Vlaams Belang. In 1996, Overmeire was involved in writing the controversial 70-point plan which was criticised by opposition politicians as racist. From 2004 to 2010, he chaired the committee of Foreign Affairs of the Flemish Parliament. In 2010, he left Vlaams Belang and joined the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) in 2011. The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) is the European Union's (EU) assembly of local and regional representatives that provides sub-national authorities (i.e. regions, counties, provinces, municipalities and cities) with a direct voice within the EU's institutional framework. Established in 1994, the CoR was set up to address two main issues. First, about three quarters of EU legislation is implemented at local or regional level, so local and regional representatives needed to have a say in the development of new EU laws. 70-point Plan (Belgium)
The 70-point plan () was a proposal drafted in 1992 by the Belgian political party Vlaams Blok as an "answer to the problem of immigrants." The full title of the plan was "Immigration: the solutions. 70 proposals for the solution of the problem of aliens" ('). The first version of the 70 steps plan was presented on 6 June 1992, by Filip Dewinter during the colloquium "Immigration: the West has to choose." It wanted to prove that a policy of return of immigrants could be realised. The plan was inspired by Frenchman Jean-Marie Le Pen's "Fifty Measures to Help Manage the Problem of Immigrants." The plan was heavily criticised because it was considered to be in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). In October 1996 the Vlaams Blok published a revision of the 70 steps plan, which according to the party was completely in line with the ECHR.
