Karen Weaver
Karen Weaver (née Williams; born 1959) is an American psychologist and politician who was the mayor of Flint, Michigan, from 2015 to 2019. She was the first female mayor of the city and the fifth African-American to hold the office. Weaver is a member of the Democratic Party, although local offices in Flint are officially nonpartisan. She is also a member of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and Governor Rick Snyder's Flint Water Interagency Coordinating Committee. During her tenure as mayor, Weaver twice visited the White House and met U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump. She oversaw the city's role in the recovery from the ongoing Flint water crisis, the most dominant issue during her mayoral tenure. Her term ended on November 11, 2019. Flint Water Crisis
The Flint water crisis was a public health crisis from 2014 to 2019 which involved the drinking water for the city of Flint, Michigan, being contaminated with lead and possibly ''Legionella'' bacteria. In April 2014, during a financial crisis, state-appointed emergency manager Darnell Earley changed Flint's water source from the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (sourced from Lake Huron and the Detroit River) to the Flint River (Michigan), Flint River. Residents complained about the taste, smell, and appearance of the water. Officials failed to apply corrosion inhibitors to the water, which resulted in lead from aging Piping, pipes leaching (chemistry), leaching into the water supply, exposing around 100,000 residents to elevated lead levels.
