Karen Brown (ballerina)
Karen Brown (born 1955 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma) is an American ballerina, educator, répétiteur, ballet mistress, and director. She is noted for her long career as a principal dancer with the Dance Theatre of Harlem and as the first African-American woman to lead a ballet company. Early life Born into a family of medical professionals, Brown was raised as one of seven children in Augusta, Georgia. As a child she attended Episcopal Day School alongside her brother Stephen, making them the first African-American children to integrate the institution. At the prompting of her mother, Brown began her ballet studies after turning eight years old to help alleviate her habit of falling. In addition to studying with the former New York City Ballet dancer, Ron Colton, Brown was also a summer scholarship student at the Joffrey Ballet school. Karen Brown (born 9 January 1963) is a former field hockey defender, who was a member of the British squad that won the bronze medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Commonwealth Silver medal and European Gold Brown is England and Great Britain's second-highest capped player of all time, with 355 caps to her name. Her record was broken by Kate Richardson-Walsh in February 2016 during a test series with Australia, where Brown was working as Assistant Coach in the GB Team. Karen McCarthy Brown
Karen McCarthy Brown (August 12, 1942 – March 4, 2015) was an anthropologist specializing in the anthropology of religion. She is best known for her groundbreaking book ''Mama Lola: A Vodou Priestess in Brooklyn'', which made great strides in destigmatizing Haitian Vodou. Until her retirement in 2009 due to illness, McCarthy Brown was a Professor of Anthropology at Drew University. At Drew University, McCarthy Brown was the first woman in the Theological School to receive tenure and to achieve the rank of full professor. Education Karen McCarthy Brown graduated with honors from Smith College receiving her B.A. in 1964. She attended Union Theological Seminary and obtained her M.A. in 1966. She began her doctoral work in 1970, graduating from Temple University in 1976. Her dissertation was titled "The ''Veve'' of Haitian Vodou: A Structural Analysis of Visual Imagery."
