Karel Choennie
Karel Martinus Choennie (born 20 December 1958) is a Surinamese Roman Catholic bishop. As of 2016, he is the current Bishop of Paramaribo. He is the first bishop in Suriname of Indian descent. Biography Choennie was born on 20 December 1958. In 1976, he left for the Netherlands to study pedagogy at Radboud University Nijmegen, and obtained his bachelor's degree in 1978. Next, he went to the monastery of Mount Saint Benedict in Trinidad and Tobago, and graduated in theology at the University of the West Indies in 1984. On 3 August 1985, he was ordained priest. In 1996, he studied pastoral theology at KU Leuven, and graduated in 1998. On 11 November 2015, Choennie was appointed Bishop of Paramaribo, and consecrated on 24 January 2016 by . Saint Peter And Paul Cathedral, Paramaribo
The Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Peter and Paul also called Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral ( Dutch: ''Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskathedraal'') is a wooden Roman Catholic cathedral located in the centre of the capital city of Paramaribo, Suriname. The Catholic congregation in the city originally used a church adapted in 1826 from a Dutch Jewish theatre built in 1809. As the years passed, the church became too small for the growing number of Catholics in the city. In 1882 the diocese decided to build the cathedral. It was consecrated in 1885, but the towers were not completed until 1901. A major restoration was completed in 2010 and the cathedral was re-opened. The cathedral was designated as a minor basilica by Pope Francis in 2014. The National Military Council ( nl, Nationale Militaire Raad, NMR) was the ruling military junta of Suriname between the 1980 Sergeants' Coup and the 1987 general election. In common usage, climate change describes global warming—the ongoing increase in global average temperature—and its effects on Earth's climate system. Climate change in a broader sense also includes previous long-term changes to Earth's climate. The current rise in global average temperature is more rapid than previous changes, and is primarily caused by humans burning fossil fuels. Fossil fuel use, deforestation, and some agricultural and industrial practices increase greenhouse gases, notably carbon dioxide and methane. Greenhouse gases absorb some of the heat that the Earth radiates after it warms from sunlight. Larger amounts of these gases trap more heat in Earth's lower atmosphere, causing global warming.
