Kao Cheng-yan
Kao Cheng-yan (; born October 3, 1948) is a Taiwanese computer scientist and activist who is founding chair of the Green Party Taiwan and a member of the Taiwan Environmental Protection Union. Professionally, Kuo is a professor of computer science and bioinformatics at National Taiwan University. Early life and education Kao was born in Taipei. His father was the owner of a Taipei factory. After graduating from Taipei Municipal Chien Kuo High School in 1967, he studied mathematics as an undergraduate at National Taiwan University and received his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in mathematics in 1971. He then completed graduate studies in the United States, where he earned a Master of Science (M.S.) in computer science in 1976, a second M.S. degree in statistics in 1978, and his Ph.D. in computer science in 1981, all from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Lungmen Nuclear Power Plant
The Lungmen Nuclear Power Plant (), formerly known as Gongliao and commonly as the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant (), is an unfinished nuclear power plant in New Taipei City, Taiwan. It consists of two ABWRs each of 1,300 MWe net. It is owned by Taiwan Power Company (Taipower). It was intended to be the first of these advanced Generation III reactors built outside Japan. The preceding four reactors in Japan were completed in four to five years. However, Taipower did not award the contract to a single architect/engineering firm; instead, they split the procurement among multiple vendors, complicating project management and increasing costs. 2004 ROC Referendum
A consultative referendum was held in Taiwan on 20 March 2004 to coincide with the 2004 presidential elections. Voters were asked two questions regarding the cross-strait relations, that is, between Taiwan and China. The initiation of this referendum by President Chen Shui-bian came under intense criticism from China because it was seen as an exercise for an eventual vote on Taiwanese independence. The Pan-Blue Coalition urged a boycott, citing that the referendum was illegal and unnecessary. Over 90% of voters approved the two questions, but the results were invalid due to insufficient voter turnout, which was below 50%.
