Kandanos or Kantanos (), also Candanos, is a town and former municipality in the Chania (regional unit), Chania regional unit, Crete, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Kantanos-Selino, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of . It was part of the former Selino Province which covered the southwest of the island. The community has 590 residents. History Nearby is the site of the ancient town of Cantanus. The town of Kandanos and its surrounding area suffered particularly badly from Germany, German occupation during World War II. During the Battle of Crete, resistance fighters had held advancing German soldiers for two days, preventing them from reaching Palaiochora to secure it. In retribution the occupiers razed the village to the ground and erected a sign: ''"Here stood Kandanos, destroyed in retribution for the murder of 25 German soldiers, never to be rebuilt again."'' Floria, Greece
Floria () is a small village in southwest Crete, Greece. Floria is part of the Kantanos-Selino municipality and, according to the latest census, has around 60 inhabitants. On 23 May 1941 and while the Battle of Crete was unfolding, Floria was the location of a fierce battle between advancing German troops and the local population, who spontaneously decided to resist them. In reprisal, a few days later German forces executed several of the villagers during an operation that resulted in the razing of Kandanos. Floria is also a name for a girl such as Florence or Florida. Chania (regional Unit)
Chania (), also spelled Hania, is one of the four regional units of Crete; it covers the westernmost quarter of the island. Its capital is the city of Chania. Chania borders only one other regional unit: that of Rethymno to the east. The western part of Crete is bounded to the north by the Cretan Sea (part of the Aegean Sea) and to the west and south by the Mediterranean Sea and Libyan Sea. The regional unit also includes the southernmost island of Europe, Gavdos. Battle Of Crete
The Battle of Crete (, ), codenamed Operation Mercury (), was a major Axis Powers, Axis Airborne forces, airborne and amphibious assault, amphibious operation during World War II to capture the island of Crete. It began on the morning of 20 May 1941, with multiple Nazi Germany, German airborne landings on Crete. Hellenic Army, Greek and other Allies of World War II, Allied forces, along with Cretan civilians, defended the island. After only one day of fighting, the Germans had suffered heavy casualties and the Allied troops were confident that they would defeat the invasion. Arta (, ) is a town in southeastern Djibouti. The center of the Arta Region, it is the country's sixth-largest city. , the population was 11,221. Selino Province
Selino is a historical region and a former province of Crete. It is located in the remote southwestern corner of the island, in the Chania regional unit. It is a rugged and remote area in the foothills of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) and also includes Gavdos, an island to the south of Crete considered the southernmost point in Europe. Selino's historical capital is Kandanos, but its largest village is Palaiochora. Sougia is a small but growing resort. The region's name derives from the Venetian castle at Palaiochora, 'Kastello Selino'. The territory of the province corresponded with that of the current municipalities Kantanos-Selino and Gavdos. Cantanus
Cantanus or Kantanos (), or Cantania or Kantania (Καντανία), was town of ancient Crete, which the Peutinger Table fixes at 24 mille passus, M.P. from Cisamus. It was a bishop's see under the Byzantine Empire, and when the Venice, Venetians obtained possession of the island they established a Latin bishop here, as in every other diocese. No longer the site of a residential bishop, it remains a titular see of the Roman Catholic Church. In the 19th century, Robert Pashley found remains of this city on a conical hill about a mile to the south of Khádros, now called Kandanos. The walls can be traced for little more than 150 paces; the style of their masonry attests a high antiquity. Ostrý Grúň () is a village and municipality in the Žarnovica District, Banská Bystrica Region in Slovakia. History The village was massacred and burned down in January 1945 by the Nazi anti-partisan unit Edelweiss, after the suppression of the Slovak National Uprising. Lidice (; ) is a municipality and village in Kladno District in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 600 inhabitants. Lidice is built near the site of the previous village, which was completely destroyed on 10 June 1942 on orders from Adolf Hitler and acting '' Reichsprotektor'' Kurt Daluege in reprisal for the assassination of Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich.
