Kamp (Bad Doberan)
The Kamp () is a triangular, lime-fringed park, about two hectares in area, which was laid out in 1800 in the centre of the small German town of Bad Doberan. In the 19th century, the Kamp was the social hub of the Doberan, because it was surrounded by the most prestigious buildings in the town. History In 1793, following the foundation of Germany's first seaside resort in Heiligendamm, the Duke of Mecklenburg, Frederick Francis I, pressed ahead with the development of Doberan (the name was changed to Bad Doberan in the 1920s) as his ducal summer residence. As well as being the residence of the Duke and his court, Doberan also became the meeting place for the social elite of the state. Whilst Heiligendamm attracted visitors with its bathing establishments, Doberan drew them mainly with its variety of amusements and social events. But the town need to be further developed. Bad Doberan
Bad Doberan () is a town in the district of Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It was the capital of the former district of Bad Doberan. In 2012, its population was 11,427. Geography Bad Doberan is situated just west of Rostock's city centre and is therefore part of one of the most developed regions in the north-eastern part of Germany. The town nestles between beech tree forests just 6 km from the Baltic Sea and is one of the earliest German settlements in Mecklenburg. Today the town is a very popular bathing resort, thanks to Heiligendamm, a district of Bad Doberan situated directly at the cliff line of the Baltic. Heiligendamm () is a German seaside resort founded in 1793. It is the oldest seaside spa in continental Europe. Frederick Francis I (10 December 1756 – 1 February 1837) ruled over the German state of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, first as Duke from 1785 to 1815, and then as Grand Duke from 1815 until his death in 1837. Early life Frederick Francis I was born in Schwerin, Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, on 10 December 1756. He was the son of Duke Louis of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Princess Charlotte Sophie of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. Gaetano Medini
Gaetano Medini (1772, Milan – 8 January 1857, Doberan, Germany) was an Italian-born German chef. In his time, he was well-known beyond the borders of Italy and was hired for the court of Mecklenburg. Life Medini was hired as a personal chef, sometime after 1800 by the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, to the court of later grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Friedrich Franz I. He received the title of chief chef. He was the head of the kitchens in the residence and later, during the annual summer residence of the ducal family in Doberan, also set up tents near the pavilions at the Kamp. Medini was married to a Swedish woman Maria (1766–1821). The architect Carl Theodor Severin, who was responsible for realizing many of the buildings in Heiligendamm and Doberan, built a house for Medini around 1825 near the Kamp on today's Severinstrasse. Carl Theodor Severin (13 September 1763, Mengeringhausen – 20 February 1836, Bad Doberan, Germany) was a German architect. He is regarded as one of the most important representatives of classicism in Mecklenburg. Life Severin was born the first child of the government and consistory council Theodor Severin (born 1733) and his wife Christina Eleonore Henrietta Becker (born 1744). Nothing is known about his education as an architect. From 1789 onward, he was based in Mecklenburg. In 1795, he was hired as the of Doberan. Severin was to assist his predecessor until his retirement in 1796.
